Superjaded announces the emergence of a band unafraid to illuminate life's emotional struggles through intense, urgent rock orchestrations. The 12 songs on this debut contain a kind of dichotomous pathos, much in the same vein as Manchester, England's the Smiths and, more recently, Seattle's Nirvana. As energetic tunes churn away with catchy and accessible hooks, lead singer Raile spews sharp-edged lyrics that are incisive and biting in their painful honesty. Stand-out tracks include "After I Begin," which confronts issues of identity, "Ankh's Decay," a song concerning self-conflict, and "Useless," a disconsolate and ironic number that seems to epitomize the group's general musical philosophy. This release emphasizes angular guitars and ferocious rhythms to get at the beauty that lurks just beneath the surface of daily disappointments and chaos. In this manner, Liars Inc. succeeds in allowing rock & roll to do what it has always done best.
