Read an Excerpt

To respond to what colleges are looking for now, I developed what I call the College Application Wheel. It acts as a framework and a tool that helps students feel in control of this sometimes confusing process. It will not only assist you in identifying your strengths and “gaps”—areas that you may need to fill in like community service or higher standardized test scores—it will also help you identify where your energy may be best spent in making yourself shine or stand out from the crowd. It will help you understand what makes you unique, how to find a college that values you for who you are, and help you see where there is a match between you and a specific college.

This book is a great, quick read that helped me to gain insight into the overwhelming application process. I liked the easy to read case study format. The case studies are short and easy to follow and most of all, easy to share and facilitate discussions with my son. The variety of scenarios was helpful because I was able to identify with and learn something different from each one, even if the case did not apply to our exact situation. The graphics and tools throughout the book break things down into simple principles and really lay out the areas to consider when trying to “market” yourself to a college while simultaneously selecting a school that’s a good fit.

This book is structured, organized and clearly laid out to allow the reader to understand the college application process and the best strategy for your student. The case studies were extremely helpful, as the concept of Mrs. Bleich’s Application Wheel is genius in helping to identify each individual’s strengths for the common application providing guidelines and giving your student the edge in standing out to the colleges they apply. This book guides you on the details of test scores, extracurricular activities, athletics, leadership, special talents and financial aid in a manner that is easy to understand and not overwhelming. Discussed is the importance of keeping your activities list updated and the key points of letters of recommendation that make a difference in your child’s application. In addition, details on the personal statement and on athletic resumes, art and performing arts portfolios submission.
