Lord Frederick Aveline, otherwise known as Derick, has successfully kept up appearances as an English nobleman. What no one knows is that he’s a full-blooded Frenchman—a double-agent for the British against the French. But there is something else no one knows about Derick. Deciding to leave behind his days of espionage, he’s arrived home in Derbyshire to finish one final order of business: to find and expose a dangerous traitor.

But Aveline castle holds its own share of secrets—including murder, and an unexpected lure in Emma Wallingford. Brilliant and feisty, her loyalty lies with acting as the town’s magistrate, and she doesn’t welcome an unanticipated, though appealing, intrusion like Derick. As the two of them are drawn closer, the sordid past of Derick’s family comes to light, as does the true nature of his arrival. But when deception, however sweet, is the name of the game no one can be trusted, and every love—and every life—is at risk.

About the Author

Heather Snow is a historical romance author with a degree in chemistry who found she much preferred creating chemistry on the page rather than in the lab. She is forever trying to wrangle her left and right brain to work together (some days with more success than others!), but if her two sides had to duke it out, left would win every time—which can be a creative challenge. Luckily, she loves challenges.…

She just goes about solving them analytically. She lives in the Midwest with her husband, two rambunctious boys and one very put upon cat. Heather truly hopes you find her stories have just the right chemistry.

Despite trying to retire from the business of being a spy, he is once again called into his country’s war on traitors. This fight takes him to the one place he never wanted to see again – home. Despite his seasoned control, Derick is having an issue with concentrating on his mission anytime Emma is near. Always the professional Derick soon discovers too many potential suspects and one surprising fact that knocks directly on Emma’s door. For Derick keeping Emma safe becomes priority number one, but he all too quickly discovers she is not only beautiful she is a brilliant scientist. Emma has spent years running her brothers magistrate service researching crime, statistics, and patterns and doing a great job of corresponding her information to other magistrates. Emma is using her beautiful mind to both assist Derick in searching for answers not only to the crimes but also about Derick himself. Emma knows there is something that is not adding up and all signs point to Derick and his refusal to answer a direct question. Time together is shows both of them the most splendid moments of passion and excitement as well as the darkest of secrets. When you spend so many years pretending to be something you are not how do you convince anyone that you truly are what they are seeing now. Readers must embrace the magic that is the romance of her words, and appreciate the brilliance of her ability to write a mystery no one can figure out

Sweet Deception is yet another fabulous story by Heather Snow. I was given the chance to listen to the audio book version of this story and I enjoyed it so much that I listened to the whole book in one day. Sweet Deception is very romantic with a twist of mystery and suspense. I loved it! I am giving it well deserved five stars. I recommend to readers who enjoy fun and romantic historical fiction. I look forward to reading more by this author in the future. I received this book from the publisher. This review is 100% my own honest opinion.

I love that Heather Snow's heroines are brilliant ladies who have found a way to make contributions to the world and don't give a fig about high society! Emma is a mathematician and statistician who serves as her town's magistrate due to her brother being incapacitated from a stroke. She's developed her love of numbers and her experience with crime into the early science of criminology. She's perfectly happy living at her country estate and taking care of the usual petty crimes of the neighborhood, but there have been unexplained deaths in recent years, and now a maid has gone missing. What she doesn't need is her childhood crush, Derick, the new Lord Scarsdale, coming back to his estate after years away and trying to take over her investigation. Derick would rather be anywhere else than on his family's estate at Aveline Castle. He just wants to complete one final mission for the War Department and then leave. The place holds bad memories for him, since his mother was always unhappy there, and both his father and mother have recently died. However, seeing Emma again does bring back some of his few fond memories from childhood. Now she's all grown up, and he is immediately attracted to her. But once he completes his mission, will she still want him, and will he overcome his own fears enough to want to stay?

Derick Aveline is Viscount Scarsdale, and he has been away from his Upper Derbyshire estate for fourteen long years. He didn’t even return for his own mother’s funeral two years earlier, much to the gossip of the neighborhood. He’s back now to hunt for a traitor to the Crown and he has focused on Emma Wallingford’s infirm war-hero brother, George. But when a maid from Derick’s estate is murdered, he has even more work than he bargained for. Especially since his childhood nemesis, Emma, is acting in her incompetent brother’s stead as the local magistrate, a highly unorthodox but important position, and one she greatly enjoys. Emma is an astute mathematician and criminologist. However, she also has her own life and the last thing she needs is Derick, a man she long ago pined for, in the way of her efficient and independent life. At first, like most men of the period, he is doubtful of her assistance and abilities. But once he sees her in action, Derick convinces her to join forces with him to find the murderer, but she doesn’t know he’s really looking for a traitor. Or that he has his suspicions about her brother. Their teamwork brought to mind Anne Perry’s Victorian era sleuths, Charlotte and Thomas Pitt. Attraction ignites between them, to Emma’s initial embarrassment and anger and to Derick’s surprise and amusement. He can’t believe his interest in the beloved childhood imp he called “Pygmy,” but she has blossomed since he last set eyes on her. They were childhood friends and she remembers the real, kind, and genuine person he used to be. Emma makes Derick forget his carefully honed role as aristocratic dandy. It irritates and disturbs him, makes him lose focus and control. And she feels it, too. Because she knows him, the real him. The mystery here is as much a part of this book as the romance, perhaps even more so. But the truths it reveals also shine light on the deep love between Emma and Derick. She realizes it before he does and the mathematician in her determines to remind him; it’s clever and sometimes amusing to see her calculations. Derick is hard on himself but allows Emma and her love to convince him. “‘Life is too short not to be with the one you love.’” (p314) In fact, it’s what Emma remembers and believes about Derick’s innate honor and goodness that is related to her research project. Their intense and intelligent (and sometimes passionate) conversations reveal Emma’s knowledge and perception and also serve to inform not only the reader but Derick, too, of Emma’s unusual and impressive intellect and keen memory. She has been hard at work on researching the role of environment in criminal behavior, the mapping of crime. Snow provides some historical facts about this in her fascinating Author’s Note; I love how I can learn new things about history when I read historical romance. I like the attention to the smallest details, for example, Snow mentions the year without a summer, 1816, the year before the novel opens. There are a lot of secrets in this story including Derick’s mysterious and complicated family history and his covert work for the Crown, the mysterious murders in the quiet countryside of Upper Derbyshire, and the search for a traitor, all of which make for an intelligent and entertaining read. This is the second book in Heather Snow’s Veiled Seduction series, featuring smart and independent female scientists. A highly recommended series.

Summary Frederick Aveline, is a peer in the realm, but has been away since he was seventeen years old. Many speculate that he is a french spy, since he is half french. But he is a spy but for England, and has spent most of his adult life in Europe to aid England in the war. He has now come back home, for one last mission, and then plans on leaving everything to start fresh, in America. His mission, go to Derbyshire, to expose a traitor, who is the local magistrate in town. But when he arrives, he finds a innocent young woman missing, and working alone side with the magistrate's sister, Emma Wallingford. Emma who used to follow him around everywhere, and he nicknamed her "Pygmy" and they developed a strong friendship. Emma, always had a soft spot for Frederick, ever since she was a child, she adored him. But then he left and she realized that she cared for him more than he ever knew. Now he is back, and they are on the search, and having to unravel a mystery, but soon a desire erupts between them, and Frederick will have to decide if he can trust Emma, will all of himself... The Hero Frederick Aveline, is quite a complex character, and I quite enjoyed his personality. He had quite a bit of depth to him, and he was the brooding hero that I just always fall in love with. Aveline is a spy for England, but has had to spend most of his time in Europe. To his country, he is only half french, but what they don't know is he doesn't have one drop of English blood in him. Frederick struggles with not feeling worthy of the title. Frederick, is quite talented at giving off the image he wants to convey. But he isn't read for Emma's smarts. He has always liked Emma, since they were children, even if she followed him everywhere. But he holds great affection for her. Frederick was quite the hero, a bit different than I was expecting. He is charming, handsome, and a scoundrel. But when you dig a bit deeper you see he has a heart of gold, but suffers from the sacrifices he has had to make, and you how tormented he is. The Heroine Emma Wallingford, may be a woman, but she is quick and smart and sassy. She is stubborn to a fault and determined to win. Emma was the type of heroine you just admire from the get go. She has tenacity and spirit, but has the sweet endearing quality about her you can relate to at any given moment. I loved how quick she is, and sees through Aveline's facade of a pompous rake. Emma has a mathematical and logical mind, her father passed away, and her brother is suffering from a mental disability, where he is only lucid for certain periods of time. So she has had to take it upon herself to be the magistrate full time. She is determined to bring a end to crime. She sees things in her mind very logical, and is determined to find out the cause of crime in England and put a stop to it (quite a challenge I know). But she is quite strong willed, and she is smart enough to do it. I loved seeing her character become quite a strong element in the story. No flight young miss we have here, I wish I was half as smart as she seems to be. And boy does she know how to answers to riddles and puzzles. Plot and Story Line This is quite a complex story, and so the plot definitely keep you excited and anxious. From the first chapter, you are drawn into a story that you know its going to surprise you...and boy did it pack quite the punch of surprises, shocks and delights. I just couldn't get enough of Sweet Deception. You see how this author weaves a tale of mystery, intrigue, depth, and heart pounding desire. I can be picky about the regency romances, but I swear this author keeps winning me over with this genre. Sometimes I get bored with it, but now when Heather Snow is at the helm. She has a beautiful way of creating a story that is intense, keeps your mind active, and at the same time satisfying you will a delightful romp of a romance. There were so many things that I adored about this story. One of the things that I found delightful was how Emma is determined to show Frederick that they are worth fighting for. She can be very bold and daring, which I wasn't expecting. At first you think of her as smart and quick, but more of the sedate time. But no, when she wants something, she goes after it, with any means at her disposal. I loved the banter between Emma and Frederick, it was quite fun and playful. Despite the seriousness of the story line, locating a traitor and a killer on the loose, but the story is also packed with a some sizzling sexual tension, and some complex character and this is a story to keep your heart racing, and guaranteed to hold onto your attention and won't let go till the last page. Cover Now I will say I just love the covers for this series. They fit the profile of the story, and the cover for Sweet Deception is mysterious and beautiful. I am a big fan for the color green, I feel like its such a good color, and really fits the heroine's style that is displayed in the story. As a whole it has a simplicity to it, but at the same time gives off a edge of mystery as well. I love her pose, its very self assured and confident--which is exactly Emma. I love the way the dress is draped on, not too revealing, but gives off a hint of sensuality. Quite stunning. Overall View Sweet Deception is a is a wonderfully written romance that combines, witty dialogue, captivating characters, fast paced plot, a few twists along the way, and a breathtaking love story. Heather Snow is a author that you HAVE to watch out for. Quite simply...refreshing and tasteful!!

Breathtaking 5/5 OMG! I just devoured "Sweet Deception" of Heather Snow! It's sensual, passionate, romantic and intriguing! It’s breathtaking! I was already hooked from the first page and could not put it down! I really preferred this second book of her Veiled Seduction series. I loved her first book "Sweet Enemy" in which her heroine was a chemist! Again, another intelligent and beautiful heroine, as Emma Wallingford, in the role of an acting magistrate. I find it so refreshing, that Ms. Snow knew how to describe smart and independent women in both her stories. I also loved Lord Frederick "Derick" Aveline who appears to be an English nobleman, but in reality is a Frenchman, serving as a double agent. Leaving his life of espionage behind, he returns home wanting to expose a traitor and meets Emma. Being a curious woman, Emma decides to question Derick about his past, but he soon discovers that he is exposing her some confidential information of his life as a spy. Little that he knew that Emma always loved him since she was a young girl. Both will start to trust each other and sparks will flare for both of them. Ms. Snow is a new author and a high quality writer that kept me interested till the end of this intriguing romance. I liked the metaphors that she used to add some spice to her character Emma, some scenes are so funny and charming! You will find a sexual intensity that will keep you awake till late in the night! A beautiful romance, evocative and emotionally rich with her characters! Let yourself be carried away by reading a breathtaking “Sweet Deception”. I can’t wait to read her third book Sweet Madness which will be release on April 2nd.

Having worked for England’s War Department for years, Lord Frederick Aveline (Derick) doesn’t know who he is anymore. He has had to keep up the act of being an English nobleman, but what no one knows is, is that he is a full blooded French. A double agent, working against the French, he must return home to Derbyshire, a place he swore to never set foot upon again. There is a traitor in Derbyshire, finding out who, will be Derick’s last mission for the country he loves. Arriving home, he finds Emma Wallingford and his castle staff in his kitchen, hunched over a map of the local area, determined to find a missing maid. Emma, his childhood friend, has grown into a beautiful, intelligent woman, who has been acting as the town’s magistrate. Realizing this will help him in his efforts to find a traitor, and a possible murderer, they must work closely together. As secrets begin to unravel, feelings come to light, will they be able to see past one another’s faults and let love in completely? Ms. Snow writes a fantastically strong, intelligent female character in Emma. She is unique in that she is a mathematician, a budding forensic scientist, with total recall of every conversation. Oh, and she has every confidence is her abilities. One can’t help but fall totally in love with her! Derick is the total alpha male, haunted by his past. Sweet Deception has everything, murder, intrigue, mystery, and romance, making this a real page turner!!! Tonya Smalley

Second book in the series, I enjoyed both books. Lord Scarsdale is an interesting character. However, Emma is the one that shines. In fact I really enjoy the females in Heather Snow's books. They are intelligent and ahead of their time in pursuing "manly" interests in science. Very enjoyable read.
