This is the story of an emperor of China who loves the song of his nightingale bird. However, once the emperor of Japan hears the plain gray bird sing he decides to give a machanical beauitful jeweled bird that sing waltzes to China's emperor. All is well, until the mechanical bird breaks. The lovely song of the plain gray nightingale has not sung since the arrival of the artifical bird. It is not until the bird hears of the emperor's illness that the bird comes back and sings again.Personal Response:This is a nice story that shows how being plain and doing something wonderful should be appreciated.Classroom Extensions:1.In the classroom this story can help students appreciate differences among individuals and realize their own self worth.2.Have the students draw pictures of a jewel bird that is wound up and a natural bird.
