I won't detail the plot as others have done. Why ruin a perfect story for readers who are in for the 'treat of their romantic lives.' I want to concentrate on why this wonderful debut novel should NOT be missed. A read about Pamela Clare's upcoming debut novel SWEET RELEASE in the RT Book Club publication the month before it was released. It sounded like a 'must read' for me so I purchased it as soon as it was released. And, believe me, I was NOT disappointed. Just the opposite. I can't remember the last book I read that absorbed me so into the characters, wrapped the story around my heart and held on until the last page was turned. What a sad day that was because I wanted it to go on forever. One would think that Pamela Clare has been writing for years and has a treasure-trove of best sellers to her credit. Her writing is supurb; what dreams are made of. But, in truth, this was her DEBUT novel. WOW! What a gift! I haven't experienced such reading enjoyment since The Flame and the Flower kept me up all night many, many years ago. Pick up this remarkable book. Sit back, relax and enjoy the journey of Alec and Cassie. You will be missing the best romance of 2003 if you don't. I am so glad it is the first book of a trilogy. In March 2004 we can look forward to the second 'treasure' by this master story-teller titled CARNAL GIFT. Yes, there is a God.

The font size with this story is too tiny. I hope someone fixes this soon. This is a very good story, one that I would greatly enjoy reading again. It would be really nice if they could include the cover picture with story too!

In 1730, shipbuilding mogul Alec Kenleigh warns his younger brother Philip that he went too far when he failed to live up to his responsibility. Philip claimed the teen he abandoned with his child growing inside her was a whore. An angry Alec insists Philip should have taken care of the woman, who died trying to abort the baby. Not long afterward, Alec is beaten, given a new name of Cole Braden, and shipped to the Commonwealth of Virginia as an indentured servant working off a fourteen year conviction for defiling women. For a few pounds, Cassie Blakewell purchases Cole to work on her large plantation. She quickly realizes this is no ordinary criminal as Alec displays business acumen. Cole insists his real name is Alec and needs to regain his identity to prove his innocence. Cassie and Cole begin to fall in love, but nothing can come of their feelings because he would hang for such a crime. Meanwhile, an unwanted suitor pushes his case to marry Cassie adding pressure on Alec who needs his freedom to marry the woman who believes he is telling the truth. SWEET RELEASE is an exciting Colonial romance that grips the reader with action and plenty of romance while also insuring the cast seems genuine. The story line is fast-paced as Alec struggles to regain what he lost and much more. Cassie is a strong woman whose trust in her beloved is the extra impetus he needs to clear his name. If this novel is any indication of Pamela Clare¿s talent, fans of historical romance have plenty of reasons to rejoice. Harriet Klausner

So good!! I am typically not a huge fan of historicals, and colonial historicals even less so, so I was hesitant. Do yourself a favor and read this book!! I promise you won't be able to put it down. Alec and Cassie are fabulous characters with a riveting story. Upon turning the last page, I IMMEDIATELY purchased the second and third books in this series. I highly recommend!!!

This is an outstanding historical romance! A must read series! I was undecided about ordering this book and after reading it I can only say that I am so thankful I took the chance. Cade/Alec and Cassie are well defined, strong characters. For that matter, so are the secondery characters. I am very thankful that I was able to get the trade on this book since I won't read e and dislike mass markets due to their general poor quality these days. The plotline in this book is very fast paced and kept me so engrossed I didn't even know the sun was up until I heard the birds chirping. Already have Carnal Gift in trade and have ordered the mass of Ride the Fire--which tells you how much I want to read it--just hope the quality is decent. If you like histoical romance with feel for the time period and depth to the romance than this series is for you.

I enjoyed this book a lot. It is full of good characters. You get to know more than just the main two characters. This one would make a good movie. This was my first by this author.

Trying to keep a Tall, Powerful male on a short leash is bound to lead to sexual tension and this novel delivers. You kept waiting for the moment he was going to break free and "cage" the heroine!

ABOUT THE BOOK: For five pounds in cash, the convict was hers. Though Cassie hated the slave trade, her Virginia plantation demanded the labor, and she knew this fevered man would surely die if she left him. But as his wounds healed and his muscled chest bronzed in the sun, Cassie realized Cole Braden was far more dangerous than his papers had indicated—for he could steal her breath with a glance and lay siege to her senses with a touch. Abducted, beaten, and given a new name, Alec went from master of an English shipbuilding empire to fourteen years of indentured servitude in the American colonies. There, he was known as Cole Braden, a convicted ravisher and defiler of women. And while he longed to ravish the auburn-haired beauty who owned him, he knew his one hope of earning her love—and his freedom—was to prove his true identity. Only then could he turn the tables and attain his ... Sweet Release. REVIEW: Ms. Clare captures my attention – completely – ever…single…time. Not a huge fan of historical romances, but this book managed to hook me in and refused to let go. I loved the story Ms. Clare set up here and felt as though how it came to be was completely original. The writing was superb and the action enough to make you sit on the edge of your seat in fear. I loved the basis behind the plot and found that the sensuality scenes in the book didn’t distraction, only enhanced, the overall story. These two characters really gathered my attention and the secondary characters only made the entire experience that much better. I won’t spoil the second book review in this one, but Ms. Clare had deemed that one her favorite. This would be the only time I would have to disagree with her – I found this piece so enthralling that I have set it as one of my favorites. Steamy, funny, fantastic read for five stars. Run, don’t walk, to get this now!

One of the most wonderful love stories I have read. The topics of slavery and indentured persons were handled very convincingly. How could you ever find a better hero than Alec? Cassie believed in him and defended him. Wonderful story and well written. Makes me sad to believe that those kind of things really happened in this great country.

I don't usually write reviews but I simply had to for this book. This is one of the best books I've read all year and believe me I read alot of books. I loved how Cassie was a "kick ass" heroine. If you want to read a book with good plot, romance, suspense don't walk to pick this one up, RUN.
