Sweeter Than Sin by Andrea Pickens

Her reputation ruined by one impetuous mistake, Lady Kyra Sterling lives as a recluse, determined never to make herself vulnerable to love again. She has her art and her flowers for solace. And that is enough--until a dashing wounded war hero come to stay at the neighboring estate.

Hoping to heal his guilt over the battlefield death of his cousin Jack, Rafael de Villafranca has come to visit his English uncle. He's also looking for some peace and solitude in order to turn his Spanish grandmother's historical notes and recipes for Theobroma cacao into a book. He doesn't expect to strike up an acquaintance with his shy neighbor, but when he meets Kyra sketching in woods and sees her marvelous botanical watercolors, they begin to bond over art . . . and chocolate!

But their budding friendship is soon challenged when the man who ruined Kyra returns, desperate for her dowry, and threatens to stir up fresh scandal if she doesn't marry him. Now she must make a difficult decision--does she make herself vulnerable again and seek Rafael's help? Or does she allow the past to destroy all hope of future happiness?

Choices, choices. However, Kyra quickly discovers that Raphael isn't about to surrender and leave her to face the enemy alone . . .

My First Read of an Awesome Storyteller! I received a copy of this book from eBook Discovery in exchange for my honest review. I am always happy to recommend a novel written by a talented author new to me who happens to be a wonderful storyteller. Sweeter than Sin is the novel and Andrea Pickens is the wonderful storyteller. When you have read as many historical romance novels as I have through the years, you sometimes think there is nothing in that genre that can surprise you, and I am so glad to be proven wrong by authors like Ms. Pickens. Her hero Rafael and heroine Kyra are so refreshingly real, honest, and vulnerable. These two people are drawn to each other because of the underlying guilt they both feel about past actions and the need for friendship and acceptance on both their parts. The supporting cast of characters that include family, other new friendships, a rescued mongrel puppy, and a villain that you'll love to hate, makes this an unforgettable story with a well written plot and a heartwarming conclusion. This book is part of a 3 book series, but can be read as a standalone and has no cliffhanger.

This story has an impetuous heroine who learns the hard way that her actions have consequences. Kyra becomes a shadow of herself until she meets Rafael. As she begins to live again, she also finds that some people are willing to overlook your past and like you for who you are. Both Kyra and Rafael experience death and guilt around them which gives them a connection to start their relationship. The tenderness of their budding romance was sweet to experience. I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it. I look forward to reading more of this series as the characters were strong and I hope to see more. Surprising Expecting the usual historical romance, I was pleasantly surprised to find that this was a story about an English / Spanish Lord comma and an English Lady of the upper class. But instead of the usual dazzlingly handsome man and gorgeous woman who is Headstrong comma this was a story of people who had significant events happened in their lives, how they found each other and overcame their issues and improve their lives. The good read, good romance and good humor

Although marred by editing problems this was an enjoyable story of friendship, family, love and chocolate. I received this book from eBook Discovery in exchange for an honest review.

I received a copy of this book from eBook Discovery in exchange of my honest review. After losing her sister in a terrible riding accident she believes was her fault, Kyra Pinnell retreats from the world in a cloud of scandal and self-recrimination. Abandoned by her fiance in the wake of a scandal that he managed to escape from unscathed, Kyra learns from bitter experience that men are not to be trusted, especially in matters of the heart. Finding solace only in her paintings of flowers, Kyra's life is filled with lonliness, guilt and self-loathing. One day, Kyra encounters Rafael, the newly returned soldier from the neighboring estate. Harboring hurts of his own surrounding the death of his cousin, Rafael is struggling to come to terms wtih his newly inherited title and status as heir to his uncle's estate. Can Kyra help him heal his own wounds as he helps her heal herself? Will he accept her once he finds out about the scandal surrounding the accident? When figures from their pasts return, will it tear them apart, or bring them closer together? This story advanced along predictable lines, and the dialogue was somewhat stilted. Rafael's obsession with chocolate, meant to be vehicle bonding him to Kyra, ends up being more of a distraction than anything, as so many passages about its history, uses, etc. seem contrived.

I liked this book. I thought it was sweet, a bit tame in terms of action and real suspense, but I enjoyed the read. I wished it had been longer as I would have liked to see more character development. I really liked the characters that were introduced and would have liked to see them more fleshed out. This is the first book I have read from this author and I will continue reading her books. "I received this book from eBook Discovery in exchange for an honest review."
