The Sword and the Dragon This epic fantasy is wonderfully written with exquisite detail that makes you believe the characters are real. From Hyden the archer and his brother Gerard to the elves to the Dying King Balton's faithful squire Mikahl, set on a journey to deliver the magical sword Ironspike to a giant, all the actions of these characters jump off the pages of a plot with so many sub plots that the reader is kept enthralled and on the edge of his or her seat wondering what will happen next. Gerard with his magic ring and the beautiful young sorceress Shaella who possessed magical powers fall in love while in pursuit of a dragon's egg for her father the royal Wizard. They and Hyden with his magical hawk, Talon are on a collision course to the kingdom of Highwander where the potent magical substance called Wardstone is formed. Whether our hero brothers or the evil Royal Wizard get to the Wardstone first is complimented by a veritable feast of tasty subjects that leave our heads spinning with magical ideas as the fantasy draws us closer and closer into a mythic web of awe inspiring proportions. This one deserves five stars.

Scheming wizards, brawling heroes, and a squire on the lamb are but a few of the deeply felt characters that kick off what I think will be one of the best trilogies to come along in a good while. The writing is fresh and familliar, and the story compelling. It was hard to keep from starting into the next chapter. I recomend this book to any fan of traditional epic fantasy.

This book is a monster and not just in size. M. R. Mathias has managed to do something extremely difficult in the fantasy genre - create something new and unique. Well written and compelling it literally turns the pages itself. I would compare this to Lord of the Rings except that LOTR couldn't hold my interest like this book. Mathias' characters are rich and well developed, the story flows easily and the reader is lost in the incredible world that's been created. I will confess that I really wasn't expecting this novel to be as engaging as it was, a lot of hype can sometimes just be a lot of hype. In this case it is well deserved. Congratulations M.R. Mathias. If you like fantasy then you will absolutely love this book. I cannot wait for the sequel.

I have read many a dragon novel in my time. But non to compair to Mathias' The Sword and the Dragon. The personal character development and attention to detail are so rich, that you are literally sucked into this novel. This massive work of a masterpiece, will be glued to your hands and mind. One of the greatest novels I have read in a long time. A must read for any and all interested in the lives and times of dragons.

Epic fantasy tales are not easy to create. There are a number of different elements that you have to put together from interesting characters, an ultimate goal, world building, and a story fascinating enough to keep a reader engaged in the first book and want to continue on to the others. M.R. Mathias has managed to bring all those elements together successfully in The Sword of the Dragon The Wardstone Trilogy, providing a gripping fantasy tale that sees man and beast come together in intriguing ways. There are a number of different characters who come from various parts of the world with Hyden and his brother living in the mountains in the land of the giants to Mikhal who believed he was simply a kings squire living hundreds of miles away. All their paths cross to create in the quest for the same goals. Mathias also has a smooth way with words allowing for an easy read despite the length of the book. It doesnt feel its 600 pages because of how well the book is written.

The story of Hyden & Gerard, two brothers of the Skyler Clan. Intertwined in a destiny of adventure and magic. Hyden has his Hawkling and Gerard his magical ring. Mikahl is a squire boy of the dead King who sets out on a secret mission to meet with the Giant King. Who discovers that he is the kings true heir to the throne. Only to have to dodge giant lizards, and various dangerous set upon him by the evil wizard Pael. Each must seek their own destiny while trying to defeat Pael and his pawn “King Glendar”. Hyden begins to see through his hawklings eyes, Gerard steals a dragon’s egg and manages to fall in love with Shaella only to be “Killed” by Pael. Yet is he really dead? What a great first book!. This book holds one adventure after another and is never dull. I totally enjoyed this and look forward to reading others by Mathais.

The Sword and the Dragon: 2016 Modernized Format Edition (The Wardstone Trilogy) by M.R. Mathias is the first of three books in the Wardstone Trilogy. The Sword and the Dragon (The Wardstone Trilogy) by M.R. Mathias takes place in the kingdom of Westland where magic exists. The Royal Wizard of Westland is trying to instigate a full out continental war by poisoning the King. The Royal Wizard plans for the prince to take the throne and start the war under his direction. However, a young squire might just upset the entire plan when the dying King gives him his sword. I have to say that The Sword and the Dragon (The Wardstone Trilogy) by M.R. Mathias reminded me a lot of the Game of Thrones TV show and book series with how it followed many different characters. It also shared the same sort of feeling of how death could come for any character at any time. M.R. Mathias did a spectacular job of constructing his own unique world with its own characters, magic, and culture. I personally found the squire to be my favorite character and I really came to hate the Royal Wizard who would think nothing of killing his daughters love. M.R. Mathiass style of writing really drew me into the book and made me feel like I was falling straight into a completely new world. I enjoyed the way that I was able to immerse myself into the world of the Wardstone Trilogy. When I turned the final page of the book, I was left with a feeling of excitement that there were two more books in the series for me to look forward to!

I picked this book because I liked the way the cover looked and I love fantasy. It was a slow start, but once I got going I couldn't put it down. Now I can't wait to see how it ends. Definitely have a new reader for this trilogy. I am going to read the other two books in the trilogy so I can see if good triumphs over evil. The character names help really draw you into the story. Some are extremely fitting in my opinion. Almost as if the writer used a description of the character until he was happy with a name for him and subconsciously used something that sounded like the description. Some plot twist I saw coming, but I still wanted to see the characters reaction, and some I did not see coming. Some characters were exactly what was needed to help show others where they were to go and which direction they should grow in. I have heard others compare this to other trilogies. I can see some similarities but I can also see how M.R. Mathias tried to make it his own work. I would recommend this trilogy to anybody who likes fantasy.

I was happy to read this one because it was very good. It did have its issues but it was a solid story. The characters were very well formed, complex, and likable. Their world and struggles come alive within this read and the author did a wonderful job creating a vivid world full of characters that I just couldn’t get enough of. The one issue I had was the amount of characters. I wish the author would have cut them by half it would have made the story a little faster as well as a little less confusing in the way of who is who and who is doing what. This being a debut even as this is the revised edition. I think the author did a great job. I will be keeping an eye out for this author in the future as I like the way his story flowed. This is one fantasy that lovers of the Lord of the Rings will fall for.

This fantasy story is full of action and adventure. Brothers, Hyden and Gerard Skyler, find themselves in a unexpected adventure. When the king is poisoned by the royal wizard the kings personal squire, Mikhal, finds himself charged with the duty of the king's powerful sword. Is there more to Mikhal than others realize? The book has twists and turns that will have you f;ipping the pages to find out what happens next. Not only will you read about humans but elves, giants, and others. Fanciful creatures are also many. The stories of several different unsuspecting heroes are woven together in this world of magic. Who will be the next king be after the beloved king was murdered? What part does the ring and hawkling have in all this? At times, because of my short attention, the story slowed a bit but overall this is a great story and well done.

Mathias' fantasy fiction novel would make an exciting comic book series or video game that both teens and adults alike will find hard to put down. Although it's quite lengthy, debut books normally in a series try to confess and disclose as much information as possible to draw the readers in, and the author executed it perfectly and with ease. Reminiscent to The Lightning Thief and Harry Potter at times, this novel have potential to reach many readers of all ages and keep them more than interested to discover what could be in store next in this action=packed trilogy. Mathias has created a magical world we only get to visit in our wildest dreams and some may never want to leave. It contains a slew of well thought out characters, good guys AND bad guys, where we all get to choose our favorites hoping some may return in the second addition to make guest star appearances. And, the adventurous and unforgettable scenes will linger long after we must say goodbye...for now.

I bought this based on all of the reviews, but was disappointed. I bought the e-book for my nook and was really disappointed when the map wasn't there. I love maps. Not so much for the world building, but I like to know where my characters are, were and where they are going. The plot seemed like it would be interesting but the writing was juvenile at times, never mind the misspelled words or the use of the wrong context, like weary when the author meant wary.......Most of that I could overlook, but at times it seemed like the author just rambled to fill the page. The biggest thing was most of the time I felt disconnected, I had no connection with any of the characters. Even when I thought I was starting to care what happened, the story shifted to another scene and I lost the connection. I finally gave up and archived it. Will probably download free samples from now on before trying an author I've never read before.

The beginning of this book is very nice--lots of action, decent characters, even interesting POV character shifts, which are hard for me to get involved in. However, the author doesn't keep it up; once you get past the first 100 pages in this 500+-page book, the action shifts to a lot of summaries of action--instead of getting to see what the characters see and feel what the characters feel, we get a summary of all but a few things, which isn't nearly as satisfying. I felt like the author should have written more, shorter books with unrelenting action rather than trying to stuff everything into three books. If he had had the same excellent pacing and action from the beginning, I would have been able to overlook a lot of other nitnoids, but as it was, I just got annoyed. For example, I didn't care for the villains; they didn't seem to be fully developed and I couldn't find them terribly threatening, but that may have been because they didn't really get much action in the book until after the author had started summing things up. They get a few scenes here and there, but the main villain comes across as mostly a lite, overly melodramatic version of Flagg from Stephen King's books. Another thing--there are a couple of token women and other races, but really, this book is about seeing things from the perspective of the male, human characters. If the character is female or non-human, expect an early death, a supporting role for the male, human chosen ones, or a lot of sobbing over a lover. But like I said--if the whole book had been as immediate and fun as the beginning, I probably wouldn't have noticed or cared.

The Sword and the Dragon is an epic fantasy with a fun and very fast pace. But if you are the type to lag behind while flipping through your bestiary, there is every fantasy monster imaginable in here to deal with you. And it's a non-stop gauntlet of them. What I was most impressed by was the multiple viewpoints from a strong set characters. Each with their own story that is brought together by the time you reach the end. Most of them are brave enough to reach for unfathomable heights, which tends to drop them into a heap of trouble. But that's okay, because chances are that they just fell right-on your most-awesome list of people as well. Then you will want to hear their history.Mikahl is the hero who takes a true hero¿s stance. He doesn't run from anything (unless it's the people of the entire country who want him dead, but this is understandable). He gets the job done, without sulking for too long over the price of saving his kingdom. The indie excitement over this book is justified. I will be reading on to, Kings, Queens, Heroes, and Fools, to hold onto my own even longer. The Sword and the Dragon will bring you right back to the magic, monsters, dwarves, elves and demons you thought you escaped by growing out of, only to realize you never wanted to. Bring a sword.

Book 1 in this trilogy is amazing. It's about two brothers who find a magic ring and go on a journey. While on the journey an evil sorceress falls in love with one of the brothers and helps them when the brother help her steal a dragon egg for her dad. The dad is a Royal Wizard who doesn't like the boy and is willing to sacrifice him. The Royal Wizard of Westland is poisons the current king so that the prince can take the thrown and start a war. A squire then runs away with the powerful sword that a dying monarch gave him on their death bed. This book is a very great fantasy book that will want you wanting more, which is great because it's just 1 of 3. It is very well written and flows easily. It has a lot of action, it goes into details and is very deep.
