About the Author

Frieda Welburn was born in Silver City, New Mexico, and was raised on a small ranch southwest of Cliff. She is one of six children born to Jim and Fannie Norris.

What made her life special is that she lived in a rocky canyon named Sycamore. Though all her friends’ families had cars or trucks for transportation, the Norris family’s only mode of transportation for the first seventeen years of her life was by horseback, or in a wagon pulled by mules to the Gila River, about six miles away. From there, the family had transportation with relatives in motor vehicles when they needed to go to Silver City.

After the author was married, she lived in Southern Nevada for forty-eight years. She taught school in Alamo, Nevada, for three years. After one more year, Frieda and her school-teacher husband, Wayne Welburn, moved to North Las Vegas, Nevada, for the next forty-four years.

Following retirement she and Wayne, who was raised on a farm in Nebraska, moved back to New Mexico to live the final chapter of their lives in a rural setting where she can be near Sycamore, and he can play with his old tractors and be a farmer again.
