Description: This is a fourth edition desk-reference that presents the most common conditions encountered by primary care practitioners in daily outpatient practice. This previous edition was published in 2015.
Purpose: The purpose is "to develop an interesting, practical, and informative approach to teaching the diagnostic process in internal medicine." This book presents a practical, manageable starting point for medical students and residents to learn the basics of medicine.
Audience: The intended readers are students and residents beginning their study of general internal medicine; however, the book is a tremendous asset for all primary care clinicians both during training and as a reference in later years of practice.
Features: The book is divided into 33 conditions commonly encountered in an outpatient clinic, such as screening and maintenance; back pain; cough, fever, and respiratory infections; acute diarrhea; and fatigue. Chapters typically begin with discussions on constructing and ranking a differential diagnosis, sorting through the differential, and key aspects of the physical examination. Patient scenarios and diagnostic pearls help inform the diagnosis thought process, while algorithms and figures demonstrate how to quickly move from developing a differential to finalizing the diagnosis.
