Reviewer: Malcolm Bilimoria, MD (Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine)
Description: This book provides a short, systematic outline of "how to" perform certain surgical procedures. In addition each description of a procedure is accompanied by a list of indications for that procedure and a short discussion about the relevant anatomy associated with the procedure.
Purpose: The purpose of the book is to provide a short "how to" manual that students and surgical house staff can use to follow cases that they may observe in the operating room.
Audience: The text is too basic for surgical house staff and clearly not a text for upper level surgical house staff.
Features: The illustrations are of poor quality and at times confuse rather than elucidate the anatomy. Many of the same line drawings appear repeatedly throughout the text. Many of the structures within the illustrations are not completely labeled, which may make them difficult to understand.
Assessment: The chapters, which are divided by organ system, are easy to access through the detailed table of contents. The strong points of the book include its concise easy to read explanation of surgical procedures. In short, however, the text is too basic for its proposed audience with poor illustrations and incomplete details on the indications for surgical procedures.
