In this epic Magykal installment, Septimus ends up on a captivatingly beautiful island, one of seven set in a sparkling sea. He's stranded there with his badly injured dragon, Spit Fyre, along with Jenna and Beetle. There are some strange things about the island, including a Magykal girl named Syrah, a cat-shaped lighthouse that has lost its Light, and an eerie presence that sings to Septimus—can he escape the persistent call?

Trouble is also brewing for Lucy and Wolf Boy, who have become entangled with some nefarious sailors at sea, and for Milo Banda, Jenna's father, who is harboring a mysterious treasure chest in his ship's hold.

Charismatic storyteller Angie Sage continues Septimus Heap's Magykal journey with more laugh-out-loud adventures, more enchanting charms and spells, and an ever-deepening understanding of the interior life of a young hero.

Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Mary Ann Darby
New stripes on the sleeves of Septimus Heap's wizard robe denote that Extraordinary Wizard Marcia Overstrand has made him Senior Apprentice in honor of surviving the Queste in this seventh series book. But another challenge waits. When he and Spit Fyre return to the Trading Post to take Jenna, Beetle, Nikko, and company back to the Castle, Jenna has run into her father, Milo with mysterious cargo aboard his ship. Meanwhile Wolf Boy, on a mission for Aunt Zelda, runs into Lucy Gringe, who has run afoul of witches. When Septimus tries to fly himself, Jenna, and Beetle home, Spit Fyre is struck by lightning near a cat-shaped lighthouse, and the four find themselves on an island where a mysterious voice lures Septimus into peril. A jinnee with attitude and a penchant for yellow helps ensure that Septimus and friends are able to save Syrah, an apprentice on the island, and to avert a deadly plot hatched by Tertius Fume. As always, there are multiple threads throughout the story, but all intertwine to create an appealing, enjoyable plot. Septimus continues to mature both in his powers and as a person, while assembled cast members also become more fleshed out, from the impetuous but strong Lucy Gringe, to the quiet Wolf Boy, and the clever Beetle, who is smitten with Jenna. Whether he is flying on a dragon, zipping through Ice Tunnels, Seen or Un-Seen, Septimus is a thoroughly engaging young hero-in-training whose accompanying friends and enemies are downright fun. Young teens are already lined up and waiting for the continuation of this delightful series. Reviewer: Mary Ann Darby

Septimus Heap returns to the shelves to the great anticipation of all teen magyk lovers! In Sage's most thrilling book yet, a new host of characters appear, giving the complex plot even more sparkle. And yet it is the familiar faces that make the many links in the chain mold together, combining to form a thoroughly enjoyable page-turner of a story. Reviewer: Christian Beck, Teen Reviewer

Gr 4–9—Septimus Heap returns triumphantly to the Castle and Wizard Tower, the only Apprentice ever to return alive from a Queste, let alone to complete one. Marcia Overstrand, ExtraOrdinary Wizard, then makes him a very young Senior Apprentice. With his new freedoms, Septimus sets out on his dragon, Spit Fire, to retrieve his brother Nicko and friends Snorri, Princess Jenna, and Beetle, whom he promised to return safely to the Castle. When leaving on this rescue mission, though, Septimus does not receive a Live SafeCharm from his Aunt Zelda, and a chain reaction of unfortunate events besiege him and his companions. Many small plotlines are introduced, but they converge clearly in Septimus's challenge on the Islands of Syren. Unlike the two previous books, which could be a little confusing, Syren is Sage at her best: it's full of fun, adventure, humor, irony, friendship, loyalty, and nonstop action. In spite of its length, fans of the series will tear through this book and come out eagerly anticipating the next installment.—Jessica Miller, New Britain Public Library, CT

I don't mean this to be a spoiler. I LOVE these books. This is the first time in a long timet hat I have been so extited and read an entire series back to back. I was hoping to find out more about the status of the dragon boat. It was not mentioned in #4 after such effort was made to get the potion to save it in book 3... It was mentioned for a moment in book 5, but only in passing. That aside, this was a great book. I love the charactors and the inventive foods & gadgets! Sage over all is a great writer who immediately draws you in and holds you for the whole ride.

I love all these books, but this is so far my favorite. Harry Potter was my favorite series. Then came along Percy Jackson and now it is Septimus Heap. I love these books!

I found this series and thought it might be good for my 9 yr. old granddaughter, who loves to read. I decided to read the first one to see what it was like and see if it would really be good for her. I was hooked after the first chapter. I read all the books and loved them. My granddaughter saw me reading one of them and asked if she could borrow them. I told her that I would give them to her for Christmas. She keeps reminding me not to forget to give them to her. She is really looking forward to reading them and I am looking forward to being able to discuss the books with her after she receives them. I recommend them to anyone with children of the age group recommended by the publisher, but also to any adult who liked the Harry Potter series.

The book "Syren," by National best-selling author Angie Sage is the fifth installment in the wonderfully acclaimed and Magykal "Septimus Heap" series, which will be seven books when completed. Containing suspense, mystery, humor, and non-stop action, "Syren" certainly does its companions justice and most surely will not disappoint anyone who reads it, from the first page to the last! With its unique storyline and one-of-a-kind characters, this book is impossible to put down and will definitely leave an indelible imprint upon the reader's heart and mind forevermore! Another great thing about "Syren" is that it leaves the reader eagerly awaiting the next book in this irresistible series starring Septimus Heap! A book like no other!

Septimus Heap has just returned from the deadly Queste, alive, no less, and is about to earn some new stripes on his sleeves:Senior Apprentice stripes from Marcia. With the new freedom he is given, he sets off on a mission to bring home Jenna, Snorri, and Nicko. But he and Spit Fyre are blown off course by a sudden storm and are forced to land on an island inhabited by a mystical Syren. Little does Sep know that by accepting a SafeCharm he refused because of past experience, he has given an all-powerful jinnee to his nemesis and doppelganger, Merrin Meredith. Enjoy this return to a land of Magyk.

All lovers of fantasy should read this book and this serie. It makes you dream about wizards, syren, genies and Magyk. Fantasy readers should not miss this wonderful adventures that changed my vision of fantasy : For me now, magic became Magyk, wands became charms, and red drangons became green. Now, my dreams are diffrent, but much more wonderful. Fantasy has become a bigger part of my imagination than it already was; now it is my favorite serie and I will never forget it. I believe you will love it, if you don't you are not a fan of fantasy.
