very good introduction to anyone thinking about getting into home machining, even other than with Sherline equipment. Lot of good general stuff about metals, tools, procedures, etc. Well worth the money'a 40% off B&N coupon helped'. Also a Sherline catalog came with the book, it was also a good reference document.

Yes, this book includes a lot of Joe Martin's experiences and reflections, and yes, it concentrates on his company's Sherline-brand of tools. Nonetheless, you'll find this a most useful book if you're interested in using a small metal-working lathe and milling machine to produce small parts or complete projects. The book provides basic information that will get you started. It includes many helpful drawings and color photos that illustrate machining setups and tools. If you don't get more interested in lathe and milling operations after reading this book I'd be surprised. I recommend it highly. Most of the techniques and methods apply equally well to other brands of machine tools, so this is not simply a glossy catalog for Sherline products.
