Description: This book discusses the mechanism and pathophysiology, diagnosis, acute and chronic management, consequences, and complications of concussion. Unique elements include a list of abbreviations in the first chapter, tables and figures, and bulleted lists.
Purpose: The purpose of this book is to provide an introduction to the domains of concussion as well as information for readers to use as they care for concussed patients. Concussion continues to be a popular and important area of study as it affects many people, and this book successfully breaks the larger issue of concussion down into manageable but comprehensive topics.
Audience: The book is written for both healthcare professionals and researchers who may be involved in the treatment or interested in the topic of concussion. The book contains chapters and language that pertain to both "bench" and "bedside" aspects of concussion, reflecting its subtitle and catering to each of the intended audience groups. One of the editors is a critical care physician while the other is a cognitive/imaging neuroscientist, both of whom are involved in management and implications of concussion and have had multiple scientific publications. There are many contributing authors, the majority of whom are physicians and or researchers.
Features: The book contains both detailed and surface-level information about concussion, from mechanisms of injury to long-term consequences following a concussion. Each chapter discusses a separate core topic with its own unique focus. The book is broken up nicely with occasional color figures and tables to illustrate key points of each chapter. There are components of the book that are more research heavy, such as sections regarding computational models of the brain, biomarkers, and biochemical implications of brain injury. These sections are balanced with less dense "bedside" considerations regarding concussion. Although briefly discussed within individual chapters, a dedicated section regarding steps toward concussion prevention — equipment, legislation, etc. — is not included in the text and would help provide a more well-rounded approach to "tackling the concussion epidemic" as the title suggests.
Assessment: Overall, this book does a nice job of presenting concussion in a thorough but easy-to-digest way, successfully targeting audience members with both basic science and clinical backgrounds. The chapters address distinct aspects of the spectrum of concussion and are clearly outlined in the book's table of contents. There is also a nice balance between inclusion of fundamental and introductory concepts as well as higher-level, emerging research pertaining to concussion.
