Which were more dangerous—his secret desires. . . or her own?

Cruel false gossip and scandal follow Velvet Campbell everywhere she goes in London—and for the sake of her sanity she must get away. Accepting a position as governess at an estate in remote Cornwall, Velvet hopes to start over, untainted by rumor. But she finds to her dismay that her new employer—the darkly handsome Lucian Pendar—is, himself, the subject of whispered insinuations . . . that he hurled his wife to her death from nearby treacherous cliffs.

But angel or demon, Lucian affects Velvet in ways she never dreamed possible, causing her heart to race, stealing the breath from her body with a look. As their mutual attraction grows, there is no resisting the passion that flares between them. Yet, as secrets from both their pasts rise to the surface, Velvet is haunted by one inescapable question: has she found a kindred spirit, her destined love . . . or placed herself in dire peril?

Meet the Author

Katy Madison has always loved stories and books. As a child she was always lugging a book around. In third grade, she fell in love with the romance genre when her mother fed her voracious appetite for books with a romance novel. Sidetracked by real life, a husband, kids, and a career at The Kansas City Star, where she authored a few incident reports and a system manual, she returned to her love of the genre with her gothic romance, Tainted by Temptation.

Katy makes her home on a tree-lined street in Kansas City, Missouri, and thinks there is nothing better than curling up in front of the fireplace with a good book while a storm rages outside.

Just finished reading this book and I really enjoyed it. It is a definite spin on "Jane Eyre," as the book is even included in the story. I was emotionally invested in the characters and while there were no shocking twists in the plot, it was clever enough to keep me intrigued until the end, and had an interesting inclusion of religion that was believable but certainly not so preachy as to overwhelm. There are two sex scenes in the book and both could've been longer and included more details for my taste, but were still sexy and fun. The ending was a bit rushed, but it wasn't so bad as to spoil it. IMO this is a fun, solidly written book with great exploration of the chatacters' emotions. Characters are relatable despite having lived through scenarios with which most readers won't have personal experience. I especially enjoyed the affectionate interaction between Velvet and Iris. I hope someday I can learn how to correct a child's bad behavior and social interactions without crushing his/her spirit the way Velvet does. :) ***SPOILER: There were some details that weren't explained that bug me...who was the "ghost" by whom Iris was haunted? Was it supposed to be Nellie or truly the ghost of Lillith? Nellie doesn't seem plausible from the descriptions of physical interactions with Iris because obviously the woman wouldn't be mistaken for Lillith. Also, the character of Meg somewhat disappears; where was she in the end? More reactions/details would have strengthened the ending and added credibility to the storyline.

The sexual tension between the two characters screams off the page with this one. Madison captures the hero's intense longing for the heroine beautifully. Toss in the dark, foreboding atmosphere, dangerous reputation of the hero, and a murder mystery and you have one great read! Highly recommend.

Easy read - story about two people who are attracted to each other, but have a lot of baggage they are afraid to expose - once the truth is revealed about each other's past they become the perfect match

This was a pretty good book. I did like the characters. The writing was also pretty good. Had some good romance scenes as well, and a pretty good story line. It kind of had "Jane Eyre" undertones to it.

In London Velvet Campbell was a magnet for gossip. Needing to escape the unfair whispers and innuendos, she accepts employment in Cornwall although she has heard cruel accusations of her employer murdering his late wife by throwing her off the nearby cliffs. Lucian Pendar hires her as governess to his daughter Iris in spite of a horrific first meeting. Velvet and Lucian are attracted to one another, but both know that the needs of grieving Iris must come first. The child not only wants her mom to come home, the woman's ghost seems to be walking the mists near where she fell to her death. As Velvet investigates the questionable death, she falls in love with father and daughter, but her efforts to prove Lucian is not a killer prove futile as each new piece of evidence she finds affirms the rumors that he murdered his wife. Although a linear story line in which readers will find no twists, Tainted by Temptation is an engaging gothic historical whodunit romance. The lead couple each has secrets that explain their role in the scandals that engulf them, but neither trusts the other with the baggage they carry. Action-packed from the moment Velvet faints at Lucian's feet and never slowing down, fans will appreciate Katy Madison's entertaining romantic amateur sleuth. Harriet Klausner
