Taking a Chance: A Whisper Creek Novel by Maggie McGinnis

A fun-loving troublemaker gives a workaholic Southern gal a real taste of Montana magic at the one and only Whisper Creek Ranch.

“Maggie McGinnis just keeps getting better and better!”—Lauren Layne

A rising star in the corporate world, Emma Winthrop enjoys the view from her cubicle in sunny Florida. But when she’s dispatched to a nursing home in Whisper Creek for three months of field experience, she discovers a slice of heaven made of mountains and mayhem—mostly in the form of rugged, drop-dead gorgeous Jasper Stone, who grinds his specialty beans at the town’s best coffee shop in between organizing dodge-ball games and wheelchair races in Emma’s hallways.

When Jasper walks in on this beautiful angel in silky purple underwear trying to rinse out her blouse, it’s a breathtaking view—even for a Montana native. Wreaking havoc here at Shady Acres keeps his dad in good spirits, but getting under Emma’s skin is proving to be even more fun. Jasper knows that he’s falling faster than a man with his past has any right to, but his body and his heart have a mind of their own. And Emma appears to be claiming both.

I'm so glad I took a chance in choosing Taking a Chance! It's a fun, fast paced romance. Jasper and Emma have similar pasts that haunt them. Jasper is fun loving and sexy. He keeps the story light when need be, but also has emotional depth and guilt he can't seem to escape. Emma is determined to stay on her career building path. Her care for others and hidden playfulness makes her a likable protagonist. The connection between Jasper and Emma is undeniable. Their banter is awesome! If you're looking for an amusing and sweet romance where the lead characters help each other find redemption, I highly recommend Taking a Chance!

Bette, the head of Shady Acres, is having surgery and is need of a replacement. Emma, a Floridian, is suddenly sent to Whisper Creek to fill in with explicit instructions to NOT make any changes. Emma, believing she was sent because she's single with no ties to Florida, soon questions why she was sent. The employees approach her with caution as they think she's there to fire them. They obviously love Bette and believe no one can fill her shoes. While Bette is not a "by the books" director, Emma is. Emma thinks everything she needs to know she's learned in school or it can be found in the instruction manual... Jasper moved to Whisper Creek years ago after suffering great loss. Jasper, an attorney, used to live in the corporate world. He spent 60+ hours a week with clients and with colleagues, just not his wife. Realizing he didn't like who he'd become, Jasper leaves his former life behind and ends up in Whisper Creek. The lure of the mountains and a simpler way of life "called" to him. Jasper opened up a coffee shop and moved his dad into Shady Acres, to be closer to him. Jasper wrecks havoc at Shady Acres, trying to make the nursing home a more pleasant place to live. When Bette leaves, she makes Jasper promise to be good... Eager to meet the new girl, Jasper walks in on Emma as she's changing. Emma thinks he's the most handsome, sexy man she's ever met. The more Emma sees Jasper with his dad and other residents, the more intrigued she becomes. Jasper finds it easy to talk, be with Emma, but also knows she'll be gone in 3mths. He's also not sure if he's ready for a relationship. Even though they know it's a bad idea to start anything, they find themselves drawn to each other.... This was such a powerful, poignant read. You laugh, cry, laugh, and then want to jump through your ereader to shake Jasper silly!!! I loved the easy banter, quick wit, and sense of family. I also enjoyed learning different ways we could make nursing homes better, less depressing. Wheelchair volleyball, designing the halls to be like city streets, and the animals-resident programs were excellent ideas! One could also envision the mountains and the stars as though they were there. I loved it!!! I read a gifted copy and all opinions stated are my own.

Love love love! Every time I read a Maggie McGinnis book, I think to myself, this is the best one yet and I am always wrong. The author brings us back to the Whisper Creek Ranch again. By the end you can't help but smile.

What a sweet story all the way through! Jasper and his antics at the retirement home along with their residents and staff were hysterical and a whole lot of fun. His commitment to that place and his father was very touching. Emma in that environment was a breath of fresh air. I loved how she interacted with everyone and kept Jasper on his toes. He was very welcoming to her. This was a very sweet read and I loved all the characters. The story just draws you in and makes you feel you are reading about your own friends. I received this book in exchange for an honest review from the publisher through Netgalley.

I sure wish I'd come across this series prior to this latest story...I immediately fell in love with the entire cast of characters and with Whisper Creek. I do plan to rectify this oversight ASAP and go backwards and start at the beginning to immerse myself in everyone's backstory. What caught my attention early on was the wickedly smart dialogue and off the charts banter that hit the perfect mixture of hilarity and dry wit. The story was fast paced, moving and turning quickly, keeping me engaged from the beginning. The premise of the backdrop of a retirement home as the stage for Jasper and Emma's story was a fresh one that I haven't seen used...very genius bringing in the residents, each playing their own part in the couple's story. Right out of the gate, Jasper jumped off the pages with his boyish exuberance and his seemingly joy for life...the author was remarkable in pulling the reader into his pain masked by his generous and giving personality that drew people to him. With her own painful past, Emma covered hers with over the top achievements in both her personal and business lives. The by play between the two was charming and heartwarming...especially when you include the kittens. I hope this isn't the last of the Whisper Creek series, I'd definitely like to return for another visit. This ARC book was complimentary, provided by the Publisher and NetGalley. I am voluntarily providing my honest review.

4.5 Stars! Maggie McGinnis is a wonderful storyteller, and as a result, I read Taking A Chance from cover to cover in just a couple of days. This entertaining and emotional narrative captured my heart from the very beginning with its engaging plot, lively characters and Montana landscape. I loved the liveliness of the nursing home setting, (yes, very spirited residents), the loyalty of the locals, and the meaningful friendships that developed quickly. Emma Winthrop loves living and working for Galway Health in the sunshine state. She believes she is one step away from a promotion, so imagine her surprise when she is transferred to Carefree, Montana, albeit only for only twelve weeks. Instead of writing proposals, making decisions and managing projects, she is the new director of the Shady Acres retirement home, one of her company's many facilities. Jasper Stone left the rat race in Los Angeles for a quieter life in Carefree. Since he owns the best and only coffee shop in town, he supplies Shady Acres with his best brews. The residents, which includes his father, truly appreciate his efforts. Jasper is not only smart and handsome, he is a goodhearted man. Emma makes him feel things he has not experienced in a long time, and within two weeks, they are more than friends. They both bring a lot baggage to their newly formed relationship. Overall, this is a well-written, emotionally charged novel with two main characters that I could not get enough of. Ms. McGinnis nicely combines sexual tension, drama, and funny moments into this clean, romantic story. I immediately connected with both Emma and Jasper, and there was never a moment that I did not want them to acknowledge their feelings for each other and become a couple. The scenes with the kittens were cute and adorable. Overall, this is a terrific book with a happy ending that will leave you smiling from ear to ear. This is the sixth book from the author's Whisper Creek series and it can be enjoyed as a standalone. Complimentary copy provided by the publisher via NetGalley.

I did not realize this was part of a much longer series. I will certainly go back and read the others after reading this wonderful story set in the beautiful state of Montana. It read fine as a stand alone but I think reading the others would definitely add to it. Emma and Jasper are just perfect for each other! I really love them together! Emma had no intentions of staying in Montana when she takes the temporary job there. She likes living in Florida. She certainly did not plan on meeting Jasper while she was there. He was her game changer. He is so charming and fun. Very nicely written story that flows so well and has so much heart. I looked forward to turning each and every page.

Emma and Jasper meet when she is sent to Whisper Creek as the new temporary nursing home director where his father is a resident. Jasper is known for his unorthodox games and his genuine interest in all the patients at the home. Jasper goes there every morning to have breakfast with his father, comes back when he can for lunch and sometimes joins him for dinner. Emma is from Florida and the mountains and weather in Montana is foreign to her. She is a stickler for rules and does not take kindly to the state of the office she is left with. She quickly learns that she needs to be more hands-on and less in her office. She thinks this job is the step she needs to obtain her goal of a promotion within her company. She realizes that the staff doesn't trust her at first and finds Jasper to be aloof at the beginning. She also fights her attraction and you wouldn't know either one of them is in their mid-30's by their actions. Jasper has baggage a mile wide and just as long. He thinks he needs to pay penance for what happened to his wife in the past. His friends and father all try to get him to see that he should be living life and not feeling constant guilt. He used to be a high-powered lawyer and now owns and runs his own coffee shop. He finds his life to be stable and is comfortable with it. Emma's presence threatens that stability and he doesn't always react well. Emma had her own secrets and baggage and both had similar heartache in their past. Emma found herself falling for Jasper, even though she knew better. When things seem to be on an even keel finally, Jasper has second thoughts and Emma is left trying to move on. She learns part of Jasper's past and tries to understand where he is coming from. I liked how Emma picked herself up and moved forward. She still kept moving forward with her goals. When something unexpected happens, Emma finds herself reeling yet again. She had valid reasons for her reaction and I understood it. Jasper needed to man up and not let his past define him anymore. You will have to read the book to find out what transpires between these two. It was a quick, easy read. I received an ARC from NetGalley for an honest review.

When Emma Winthrop is sent to Whisper Creek to take over momentarily at Shady Acres nursing home she is certain she has been sent to a whole other world, it's peaceful, charming, and so unlike the bustling city life she is use to. Then she meets a certain sexy barista that instantly starts to stir up the butterflies in her stomach, he is charming, funny... and very easy on the eyes. But getting involved with him seems silly since her stay in town is temporary... The moment Jasper Stone's eyes land on the beauty sent to run Shady Acres he can't help but fall a little for her, she is unlike any other woman he has ever met, and the sparks swirling around between them tells him there is something there worth exploring. But her stay in Whisper Creek is short term, so he must decide if that "something" between them is worth the risk to his heart... Taking A Chance is a touching, light-hearted, literary treasure! It has been a while since my last visit to the Whisper Creek series, but mere minutes into this read I found myself making myself right at home all over again, oh how I missed these wonderful characters! I thoroughly enjoyed this new addition the series, it warmed my heart, made me laugh, and left me blushing more than a few times! The story line was engaging and held my interest throughout, and the characters were perfectly crafted... you really can't go wrong with this one, it is one of my absolute favorites from Ms. McGinnis to date! Highly recommend this one, these small town folks are sure to charm their way into your heart! I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this title.

3.5 stars I had read another book in this series and had enjoyed it, plus I really liked this synopsis, so I was eager to get to it. I really liked Emma and Jasper. She’s spunky and sweet and he’s charming and goofy. They’re also really good people with similar backstories. Of course I loved the dynamic at the ranch and seeing the characters I was familiar with. Plot wise, it was good. I was interested in what was happening and I enjoyed seeing Emma and Jasper grow. My main complaint is that I didn’t see much chemistry between them. Yes, they talk and go out a few times, but there are {I think} two kisses and one fade to black and it felt more like they were friends more than anything else. Overall, it was a quick read and the characters are fantastic. I loved the ending and the epilogue and I’m seriously thinking about reading the previous books. **Huge thanks to Loveswept for providing the arc free of charge**

Sweet. Swoon worthy and a ton of fun! Emma and Jasper are impossible to not fall in love with. Taking a Chance follows the story of Emma and Jasper. Emma is a workaholic who lives in sunny Florida. She loves her life and isn’t too pleased when she finds herself temporarily transferred to Montana. Montana is unlike anything she’s experienced and when Jasper enters her life, truer words were never spoken. Jasper is wild and always up to no good. He loves to have fun and can’t resist getting under Emma’s skin. What he never planned on was falling for Emma himself…. Overall, I thought this book was a lot of fun. It was heartwarming and a total breath of fresh air. I thought that this story was really well written and was totally easy to get swept up in. I enjoyed getting to know the characters and falling in love with their story. I loved the setting of this story and thought the plot was a lot of fun. Emma and Jasper had great chemistry and they kept me coming back for more. This is my first book by this author and I look forward to discovering more of her books in the future.

It never fails! Every time I pick up a Maggie McGinnis book planning on reading a couple hours I get so consumed by the story that by the time I look up it's late into the night and I just have to finish the book! That's exactly what happened with this incredible book. Jasper and Emma's story is simply wonderful. Jasper is funny, loving, kind and oh so sexy. Then there's Emma. A little stiff, a bit driven, but with a heart as big as Montana. Not only are these main characters completely entertaining but the secondary characters are as well. When Emma was unexpectedly sent from her cushy corporate office to work in this facility in Montana she never expected to fall in love with the people, the place, or the man but fall she did. How can she ever go back to her boring life now?? You don't want to miss this one! I highly recommend it.

Taking A Chance is a delightful love story that takes place, in Carefree, Montana, five miles outside the magical waters of Whisper Creek. Emma Winthrop has been trying to impress her parents, for forever. She’s been climbing the corporate ladder at Galway Health for ten years. When she was called into the office, Emma was sure it was for a promotion, but instead of getting a new office, she was handed a temporary nursing home assignment in Montana. Emma had a masters degree in Health Administration but knew very little, about the day to day, decisions of running a nursing home. She was hoping that her inexperience wouldn’t be blatantly obvious to the staff. It was. Emma would discover, though, that keeping her heart from breaking was much more difficult, than being a nursing home administrator. Jasper Stone owned a coffee shop, in downtown Carefree Montana. He was also the go-to-person for anyone who needed help; such as, caring for kittens, or cooking a meal at Shady Acres nursing home. Jasper believed that he had a lot to atone for, especially in the romance dept. He never wanted to destroy a woman’s life again. So when Emma Winthrop walked into his life and stole his heart, Jasper was beside-himself. He wanted Emma desperately but knew that he could never have her. Jasper and Emma, both carried unresolved guilt, and couldn’t enjoy life to the fullest, because of it. Self-forgiveness is many times much harder than forgiving another person. Whisper Creek, however, is a magical place of healing. Some say the magic is in the air and the mountains, others say it’s the friendliness of the staff and horseback riding. But the people from Whisper Creek will tell you that the secret is in the water. I loved both of these characters. It was heartwarming to watch Jasper and Emma, grow and blossom. Maybe, Whisper Creek truly is an enchanted place for healing the soul. Taking A Chance is a touching story. It’s a light, wholesome heartfelt romance. Thank you, Random House Publishing- Loveswept and NetGalley, for my advance review copy.

My Thoughts This is a true opposites-attract, second-chance-at-love contemporary romance set in a beautiful location filled with unique characters and set at an easy reading pace that keeps one pretty much glued to the pages from beginning to end. While being the 6th book in the series this time the town of Carefree Montana not the Whisper Creek guest ranch takes center stage, just 1 step behind the Shady Acres retirement home which gets the top billing honor. From the irrepressible Archie to the less-than-perfect Cook Horace both the residents and staff will steal the readers heart from page one. Emma and Jasper are just the perfect pair to carry on the tradition of those who have no intention of making Carefree their future home. A tradition that this time did not need a little help from the magical properties of the drinking water at the Whisper Creek ranch like the 5 couples before them. [EArc from Netgalley]
