Taking Shots: The Assassins Series by Toni Aleo

In New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Toni Aleo’s exhilarating Loveswept debut, the first in a series featuring the hockey hunks of the Nashville Assassins, a reformed bad boy helps a charming, willful woman face off against the demons of her past.
No matter how hard she tries, Elleanor Fisher never thinks she’s good enough, from her job to her weight to her love life. After enduring years of abuse at the hands of an ex-boyfriend, Elli has been drifting through life in a daze. Until, that is, she meets Shea Adler on a promotional shoot for the NHL’s Nashville Assassins. Before Elli knows what’s happening, the gorgeous Shea breaks the ice and shatters her world.
A brilliant athlete inside the rink, Shea Adler is tired of the life he’s living outside of it: the women, the money, the drinking. But everything changes when he meets Elli. After laying eyes on this feisty, witty, beautiful woman, he feels like he’s just taken the hardest hit of his life. No matter how skeptical she is, Shea knows they are meant to be together—if only he can convince Elli to put her insecurities aside before she misses out on a shot at love.

Hard to believe that a size 10 is Fat

the book started out well, had a great idea. it seemed like the author was trying to just write to make pages because there were times when it became "he walked up to the car. he opened the door. he got in. he started the car." and far, far too much detail about nothing. some moments it was just glazed over when more details could have been added. Also, shea and Eli started out cute. then one argument after another after another and Eli constantly pulling away and crying over everything and Shea getting pissed over every singe thing. Also, far, far too much of the same details in the kissing and foreplay scenes. over and over it felt like i was reading the exact same scene. I am a fat girl, so i get the insecurity issues, but i really feel like Eli became a sniveling whiny brat and Shea was just a horny defensive dickhead at times who needed his sister's approval and to tell him how to live every moment of his life. This book was far too long, full of far, far too many arguments and misunderstands between the "lovers" and far too much. Enough with the arguments. i actually skipped about 50 pages in, and ...suyrprise came straight to another argument where...surpise Eli was about to walk out on him again. just too much. if i ever knew a couple that fought that much, i'd pray they broke up and found a good therapist. Not worth the money. i think the writer has great potential as did this story, but it all went downhill...fast.

This book was really well done! I felt the ups and downs were spot on with a real relationship, and this book had just enough of the "romance" to satisfy! Will be sure to look for the next!

Taking Shots is one of the best romance books I have ever read! Elli and Shea’s story is so enduring and real that you really can’t miss this book. All of the characters from Elli and Shea to all of the supporting characters are extremely real and relatable. Elli struggles with insecurities that many women struggle with every day. The book is also hilarious and there are so many times that I burst out laughing in the middle of reading. Honestly this book is a great read and you won’t be able to put it down!

Of detail....the first few chapters the author described every single move....it did pick up and it did get better. I almost gave up on it but am glad i finished this cute little story. Elli needed to suck it up though and dial down the whiny i'm not pretty enough for you crude she kept spewing.

Fantastic Hockey Novel 5 out of 5 Stars Wow!  Taking Shots by Toni Aleo is such a great book!  I started off by telling myself I was just going to read one chapter but less than a day later I’m done.  I haven’t found a book that I wanted to stay up during the wee hours of the night and get up early to read in a very long time.  As soon as I finished, I ordered the rest of the series, which I NEVER do! Eleanor “Elli” Fisher meets the gorgeous captain of the NHL team, the Nashville Assassins, Shea Adler, when she is doing a promotional photo shoot for the team before the season.  Shea Adler is taken aback when he first sees her and how beautiful she is.  Even though she is not his typical type, which is skinny and blonde, he finds her curvy body and dark hair beautiful.  If only, Elli would see herself that way.  She is very insecure in her looks after she gained a lot of weight after getting sick and losing some of it, but never getting to the weight she once was.  It doesn’t help that her family, besides her dad and Uncle Bryan who owns the Assassins, treat her horribly making fun of her cruelly at every chance they get.  Can Elli get passed her insecurities to be with the man of her dreams?  Will she allow her family to keep diminishing the beautiful person she is?  Can Shea commit to one woman for longer than one night? I absolutely loved this book and fell in love with the characters, even though I wanted to shake them at times and say “what the heck are you thinking??”  I cannot wait to read the rest of the series.  I would highly recommend this book to anyone that loves romance and hockey or at least a sports fan.

I have not laughed or cried for a book like in this in some time.  Toni Aleo has outdone herself and completely blown  me away!   In this book, Shea is a hottie and a hockey player who meets Elli at a photo shoot for the team.   Sparks fly immediately but their story is not a simple one.  Elli has been hurt by many in her past, men, family etc.   Shea tries to show her that he can learn about love and be loyal only to her.   Is an amazing story and I loved every page.  Good read!!

Taking Shots is the story that started it all and officially caused me to fall in love with hockey, or at least the hot players of the game.  Toni Aleo has delivered a contemporary romance that is engaging, romantic, very hot, and the beginnings of an outstanding and addictive series.  I came to love both Elli and Shea, and despite her insecurities, I really liked them both and enjoyed watching their relationship develop.  The romance was great, and the book has the right mix of humor, drama, romance, and steam.  I love sports themed books and this was another draw to this series for me.  If you love contemporary romance then then is one series you won't want to miss.  I can't wait to see what else this author has to deliver her fans in the future.

I love hockey romance, and I have no idea why I waited so long to try Toni Aleo’s Assassin series. This is the first book and the series starts of strong. Shea Adler has easily become a favorite hero of all time for me. He easily wins me over and I can definitely see why Ellie Fisher falls in love with him, mostly because despite her insecurities he doesn’t let her not fall in love with him. The man is super determined and I love that about him.  The story builds up slowly and simmers nicely and left me very satisfied when I finished. I wanted my own Shea, and envied Ellie. I very much related to Ellie and some of her insecurities and I definitely loved being able to have the fantasy of a very attractive man like Shea sweeping a plain jane, at least in her eyes of her feet. Ms. Aleo gives us a beautiful love story and I know I’ll be reading the rest of the series and very possibly re reading this book.  I recommend this story for lovers of strong hockey players who don’t let their women put themselves down and know how to properly worship a woman. This is the story for any woman who doesn’t think they deserve a hunky hero, because Ms. Aleo gives the fantasy that it could happen and a perfect way to spend an evening.

When I read this amazing book for the first time it was June of 2012. It was summer, I was bored and this, kind of, long book (so much pages =)) didn't scare me at all. XD Characters were good, I really liked Elli and Shea. Supportive characters were good too. I adored Jakob & Harper. Grace was amazing. Same goes to Bryan, he was so cool. He is one of my favourite characters. Olivia & Victoria, on the contrary, were so awful. They really pissed me off. P.S. For the past 4 months I readed this book at least 3 times ;)

Absolutely amazing! In love with Elli and Shea and very sad I don't know them in real life. Absolutely amazing story. I felt every emotion with them and was in complete suspense until the very end. I am excited to be reading the next books in the series as well. I highly suggest this book!
