This is such a good book! For the first time, Derek opens up about how he was bullied as a young child in Utah. As a mom myself, it made me want to cry and just give him a big hug. I've been a fan of Derek pretty much since the beginning of his debut on Dancing with the Stars but he really caught my eye in season 10 with Nicole Scherzinger. I had a chance to see his Move Live on Tour last month with his sister Julianne and got to meet them both prior to the show. They were both so sweet and nice! SO much more gorgeous in person. Derek shares his lessons he's learned over the course of his life in this book. He shares competing on the international ballroom dance circuit in Europe while under the tutelage of Corky and Shirley Ballas in London. He tells of how he got involved with Dancing With the Stars. Several of his former Dancing with the Stars partners share snippets of what they think of Derek at the end of the chapters..we hear from Shawn Johnson, Amber Riley, Maria Menounos, Jennie Garth, Jennifer Grey, Amy Purdy, Brooke Burke and his Season 16 partner, Kellie Pickler, wrote the forward for this book! If you ever wanted to know more about the man who has won Dancing with the Stars an unprecendented FIVE TIMES and who also won an Emmy for Outstanding Choreography last year (he's also nominated again this year), I highly recommend you read this book. If you are one of those people who think Derek is an arrogant jerk? Again, read this book, I think it'll change your mind.

I truly loved Taking the Lead. I know of Derek Hough from his work on Dancing with the Stars, but was so interested to find out the background and experiences of the man I see every week on TV. It is such a vivid and interesting life. From being bullied as a child to his success on TV, Derek Hough really lets you into his life.

This is not a biography but a look into personal events of Derek's life from trials and tribulations to successes and failures all of which push him to constantly strive for improvement in himself and others. An easy and empowering read to prove life goes on, failure is not a loss but a challenge from which one should learn then move on. You're the one who decides if you "go for it with gusto" or "just give up"!

I felt like, I was reading a self help book ! I love Derek on DWTS, I think he is an awesome dancer & choreographer. I just expected more of a biography than this book turned out to be. I hope he comes back to DWTS soon, the show is not the same without him. MJ Mason

Taking the Lead is about finding yourself and following your dreams. Derek Hough uses his personal experiences to motivate his readers and fans to reach for the stars while being the best version of themselves they could possibly be. In the book, Hough shares the lessons he has learned from his parents getting divorced when he was very young, getting bullied, moving to England, going to auditions, getting rejected, changing partners, making it to the top of the dance world, what being famous is like, and much more. The book is a simple and inspiring read about facing life's challenges, and after finishing it, I can honestly say that whether or not a fan of the arts, DWTS, or Derek Hough, anyone who reads this book will be moved Hough's story.

An amazing, gifted, grown up boy who never rests on the words "I can't" because he can.

I can't say enough about this book. It is moving, guiding, and passionate. I read the book in 6 days and I NEVER read books. He draws you in and guides you through his entire journey. He makes you understand the part of life that is hidden: following a dream. IT IS A MUST READ- I recommend at least trying it. I couldn't keep my eyes off the book.

Loved the book! I have loved watching Derek dance on DWTS since he started. And the book just exuded his warmth and caring and special talents on every page. I wasn't sure what to expect in a book - but I am telling everyone I know how great it is. Thank you, Derek, for sharing your thoughts and bio (to date) with us. I imagine your future has lots more of the fun and fabulous in store for you. You will make it so!

Very dry and dull. I felt like it was a waste of both time and money.
