Taking The Reins (The Rosewoods, #1) by Katrina Abbott

Brooklyn Prescott (if that’s even her real name) is the new girl at The Rosewood Academy for Academic Excellence, now that she’s moved back to the States after two years living in London. Rosewood, a boarding school for children of the rich and famous and known for its celebutantes, is missing just one element important to any junior’s education: boys. But luckily for Brooklyn, and the rest of the Rosewood girls, there’s a boys’ boarding school, The Westwood Academy, just a few miles away.
On her very first day, Brooklyn meets Will, a gorgeous and flirty boy on campus to help with move in. But is he who she thinks he is? And what about Brady, the cute stable boy?  Or Jared, the former child actor with his grown-up good looks who can always make her laugh? As Brooklyn settles in at Rosewood, she’s faced with new friends, new challenges and new opportunities to make herself into the girl she always wanted to be. Whoever that might be.
Taking The Reins is the first installment of The Rosewoods, an exciting new Young Adult series for readers who love fun, flirty love stories.

About the Author

A survivor of adolescence, Katrina Abbott loves writing about teens: best friends, cute boys, kissing, drama. Her main vice is romance, but she’s been known to succumb to the occasional chocolate binge. She may or may not live in California with her husband, kids and several cats. Taking the Reins is not her first book.

Clean Teen Romance: Brooklyn wasn’t the fun girl or the popular girl. She was the plain girl. The girl no one noticed. However now was the best time for 17 year old Brooklyn to change her image. She was not only starting a new school she was also moving countries. The shy awkward Brooklyn was gone. Now she was flirty, fun Brook. This is a lovely fun teen romance suitable for young teens. I loved that the girls were all nice to each other and immediately accepted Brooklyn into their circle. Even in a girls boarding school they still managed to have some fun and even wrangle a few sneaky meet-ups with the boys at night. I am sure a lot of young girls will relate to Brooklyn. (Who wouldn’t want to start all over again with a new school and new image?) I would recommend this novel to any teenage girl that enjoys fun, light reads. Taking the Reins is the first novel in The Rosewoods series.

Brooklyn is one of those teenagers that could easily go either way--she was a studious student, plain, and introverted for years. Now with a change of schools (to an elite private girls school) she could transform herself a bit--flirt with guys (they have several occasions to get with the boys school down the road for dances, or even sneaky meet-ups), make girlfriends (and every one of them at this school seems to be real nice and welcoming), and get back into dressage (English horseback riding of sorts). Then the school's community service project assigned to her gets in the way--schedule conflict. Even the almost always forbidden rule about changing duties with another student could prove problematic (better detail if trade is permitted, but could cause friction in a newly-found wonderful friendship). Brooklyn has meet three interesting boys with diverse issues (surprises here) if she tries to connect with them. She would love to have a boyfriend, but...who? Can she have her pick? Of course not! Or maybe somehow eventually she could end up with the one the reader seems led to route for--Brady! But a relationship here could cause him a great deal of personal loss. She wouldn't let him risk that even if he wanted to--seems he may not though. Hearts and heads appear torn. Would he have been her second choice? Is a third alternative the only one that could work? The story pulls you along as you want to find out. While you could stop after this book in a 13-part series, and the romance is basically flirting and some kissing (making out), nothing seems settled completely at the end of the book. Maybe a start of something possible. I hope the ending (last book) and maybe some middle ones have things working out just how the reader might best want it. Hmmm? It is well written and thoughtful, even fun to read, but seems like a long series with the number of books in it. But this book was quite enjoyable.

I'll admit that I mostly stick to fantasy when I read YA books, but I really enjoyed this one. Katrina Abbott has created an interesting storyline with great characters. This book was a fast-paced read and I can't wait to read the next one.

I think this book is a perfect read for teens...please note it's a good read period. Since I went to an all girls high school, I definitely remember the boy crazy faze, lol. The favorite all boys school with the cuties guys that you always wanted at school dances and to partner with in plays. And the clicks and the insecurities. For me it was somewhat back down memory lane. Enjoy, I did!

I enjoyed this clean, cute novel about a new girl at Rosewood Academy.   We get to reminisce about roommates, loves, and pranks.   This has a cute storyline with likeable characters having fun. Sweet, quick read that is the start of her series - The Rosewoods.
