I read this book within days of visiting Canyon De Chelly for the 4th time. HIs descriptions of the landscape are so vivid and his retelling of the Navajo beliefs are wonderfully educational. What insight one gets into the culture of the Navajo! The Chaco Canyon history was the best I've read of that area. A really great read for anyone interested in Native Americans and our great Southwest.

I have been interested in the southwest most of my life, usually getting my 'fix' for the area through Tony Hillerman novels. When I came across this book it immediately attracted me. I was not disappointed. The story is well written with just the right amount of history, both past and present, to clarify and educate in the many experiences this family faces on their journey. They endure many things, both good and bad, but through it all they grow as individuals and as a family. Having travelled to the southwest many times, I was able to revisit some of my favorite places through the pages of this wonderful book.
