I like the artwork in this book quite a lot, but I can't quite figure out how I would use it. It seems a little too sophisticated for a child young enough to want an ABC book, but an older child who would be impressed by the art would probably be bored with an ABC book. Perhaps an older child who is interested in nature would enjoy learning about the plants and animals in the book.

This is a beautiful scratch-board illustrated alphabet book. The author depicts many animals and plants such as the white-tailed deer and the short-eared owl, as well as the endangered species like the greater prairie-chicken, each living in their native habitat. McGehee also provides the common and scientific names of all the plants and animals she illustrates. This is a well-designed, attractive, and educational ABC book.
