It's been four years since we've heard from Tanya Tucker, but she gets things going right away with "Old Weakness (Coming On Strong)," which wriggles into a lubricious, early-'70s Stones-style R&B groove, before her sensuous, husky voice comes on sexy and bluesy. Tucker's saucy side, which is on ample display on Tanya, is so alluring it's easy to overlook her considerable prowess as a ballad singer. That's about to change, because the mark of this long player is its resonant, introspective vocalizing. For instance, in contrast to the steamy opener, "Oh What a Love" -- a measured tale informed by a whole lot of experience with love gone wrong -- frames her intimate, hushed revelations with acoustic instruments and low-key strings. Similarly, "We Had It All," a bittersweet look back at a time when passion prevailed over possessions, produces a devastating litany of the banal, telling signs of lovers uncoupling. Tucker's singing is so masterful without adornment that the bombast of "Over My Shoulder" and "Waitin' for the Sun" seems misplaced, but the balance of muscle and sensitivity in her emotional readings makes both performances wondrous. And on "1010 Whippoorwill Lane," a melancholy reminiscence about the good old days, she travels to places in the heart reached only by those with some living under their belt. Her sensuous side still comes through -- who but Tanya could kiss off a lout and still sound so enticing on the languorous, blues-based "Should'a Thought About That"? The musical artistry supporting these songs is inspired, but the story is the singer's fearlessness in revealing the wisdom she's gained the hard way. Billie Holiday would understand exactly where Tanya Tucker's coming from this time out.

I bought Tanya the other day and cannot believe how great this disk is... the songs are tight and very smart with a great mix of blues and modern country. Her voice (raspy yet tender) is better than ever. This is, without a doubt, the best Tanya Tucker cd in ten years.

This is definitely one of the best recordings of her 30 something records. WE HAD IT ALL, I STILL HEAR YOUR VOICE, I CAN DO THAT all are great just like the first single A MEMORY LIKE I'M GONNA BE. If you've ever liked Tanya Tucker, this CD is a MUST for your collection of music!

It's about time we hear from Tanya again and when I heard this new song of her's..."A Memory Like I'm Gonna Be" I fell in love with it the first time I heard it! The lyrics are great as well as the music. I look forward to being able to buy this album next week and listen to the rest of the songs on it!
