I first read this book in 1979 and it was my start in the world of science fiction. Unfortunately, the series should have been laid to rest a LONG time ago. Its been long enough ago that I don't remember what events very clearly which, combined with Mr. Foster's random jumps back and forth in the timeline and generally forgettable plots, makes it hard to remember the storyline.... I thought some of the various encounters with the Aahn were interesting, but the Ulru-Ujurrians was not (except as a lame plot device to get Flinx his own ship). I liked "Bloodhype" (?) with its encounter with the lone 'lunatic' Tar-Aiym who helped Flinx face off against Vom, but its the only other book in the series that has been AT ALL worthwhile... Like Orson Scott Card's "Ender's Game", Mr. Foster starts off with a great premise and a great first book and then essentialy milks the series along with no other apparent objective than book sales (neither author has had a meaningful/memorable story in the interim). I have checked out the other books in each author's series from the libarary, but have never bothered to buy them because they do not begin to compare to the series opener in ANY way...

I enjoyed it enough to read it twice. Plenty of action and likable characters. The author paints a good picture of the world he has created.

I rated this 4 stars, but that is because this book, and those that follow it, are very entertaining even if they are not high in brain food nutritional value. While they are not the hard, serious si-fi that garners my 5 start reviews I find that I always enjoy reading them and breeze through them quickly. Set your expectations right, sit back and enjoy a good adventure.
