Children's Literature
Since her mother has to stay in the hospital for the rest of her pregnancy and her father is working on an oil rig, Tara has to stay with her grandmother. She loves Gran dearly, but she hates being cooped up in the tiny apartment! When she can, Tara sneaks into the garden. She knows she should not be there; Gran's told her many times that it belongs to Mr. Barenstein, the tenant of the garden apartment. But Tara loves the feel of the cool grass underfoot. Then there is a wonderful surprise phone call—a mysterious errand. And the chance for a thoughtful little girl to learn a whole lot about family, longing, and loss from two people whose experiences of World War II shaped their lives dramatically. This book is surprisingly thought-provoking for such a slender book. Readers are sure to be engaged by the story and historical note. The gardening activities recommended on the last page make this a nice companion to a science lesson, too. This book is part of the "Go Bananas" series. 2006, Crabtree, Ages 8 to 9.
