Overview

Target America (Sniper Elite Series #2) by Scott McEwen, Thomas Koloniar

From the coauthor of the #1 New York Times bestseller American Sniper comes a heart-pounding military thriller in which the fabled domestic Special Ops Black unit is activated in order to stop a group of Chechen terrorists from launching a pair of “suitcase” nukes somewhere in America.

When Chechen terrorists manage to smuggle a Cold War era Russian nuke across the Mexican-American border, the President is forced to reactivate the only unit capable of stopping them: Navy SEAL sniper Gil Shannon and his brash team of SEALs and Delta Force fighters. First introduced in Sniper Elite: One Way Trip, hailed by Publishers Weekly as a “meaty thriller” with “snappy dialogue and well-timed humor,” Shannon and his team were run out of the military after defying direct orders and instead choosing to save the life of one of their own.

In Target America, Gil and his team, many of whom had gone rogue, are reunited as an off-the-books Special Ops unit that must race against the clock to save the country from nuclear destruction.

#1 New York Times bestselling author Scott McEwen once again delivers a gripping and fast-paced adventure that illuminates the shadow world of clandestine military operations.

It took me over 10 months to read this book completly but it was so good I never lost track of where I was in the story! Well worth a read.

I am a seven-decade-old retiree from military intelligence and criminal investigations, served in Vietnam, and I am still active in law enforcement special operations, including precision shooting. In addition to innumerable military histories, I’ve read many books of fiction in this genre. This and the preceding book by the same authors are far superior to anything else I’ve ever encountered. Although I can quibble over their exaggerated descriptions of wound ballistics (especially in the first book) and confusing terms for exercises with the read deal, everything else is remarkably accurate. The plots, like most works of fiction, require some “suspension of disbelief,” but they are believable enough. The telling of the stories, though, is how they set themselves apart. The characters are people whom we can care about, and even for someone who considers himself to be inured to the worst that humans can do to each other, I often found myself cringing at the descriptions of what happens to them. I can hardly wait for the next books in the series.

This novel takes terrorism to the next level, as two two-kiloton atomic bombs are smuggled into the United States, apparently with the intention of detonation on the anniversary of 9/11. One bomb detonates while being brought through a tunnel usually used to smuggle drugs in from Mexico, but the location of the other is unknown, and the race to find it serves to provide much excitement for the rest of the novel. A broad picture is drawn of how such activities are financed and arranged, involving all kinds of terrorist groups, how the government works (or doesn’t) in an emergency, and especially how mavericks can somehow achieve finite results despite bureaucratic indecision. It makes for an exciting ride from cover to cover, and is recommended.

Decent vacation book if you don't pay much. Some "over the top" elements, but the battle segment on the ranch was very well written. aj west

I got it as a Daily Find so it was worth that. Never read McEwen before so not sure how it compares to his other books. I thought it was a sniper novel but it was more about a pseudo-SEAL team chasing nukes. Lots of action (some of it a bit over the top) and if you can suspend reality while you're reading it, its good. Would make a good read if you were on a plane for a few hours, you could finish it before the flight was over. Can't say that it made me a McEwen fan but I might pick up another of his books if it was on sale.

The scenarios that come close to possibilities will keep you on the edge and turning pages while reading this spectacular thriller. The author draws you into Gil Shannon’s shadow world of clandestine military operations and you feel you are there with the characters. The combat scenes are as real as possible, and the dangers faced by Gil and his buddies are very well described. America becomes a target of Chechen terrorists as they smuggle a Cold War era Russian nuke across the Mexican-American border. Mishaps cause the nuke to explode  beneath one of the illegal tunnels that crosses the Mexican-American border.  Further details emerge that this was one of two nukes the terrorists conveyed across the border.  Another nuke  is ready to be set off someplace n America. The President is compelled to reactivate the only unit capable of stopping them. He orders Bob Pope of the CIA to reactivate Navy SEAL Gil Shannon. Shaanon was  recently pulled out of retirement by Bob Pope,  the director of the CIA’s Special Activities Division, to track down two terrorists involved in the real-life attack on the American mission in Benghazi.    Shannon puts together his old unit, the strident  SEAL Team Six Black with some comrades in the Delta Force fighters to locate the second nuke. These vivacious characters add drama and some humor to a very tense situation. With only a couple of days before the  proposed terrorist nuclear attack, the Seal Team Black must act on instinct and persistence. While defying many of the President’s commands, Shannon and the SEAL Team risk their careers and lives to take down multiple terrorists across several states within the U.S. The most riveting and surprising event in the story is the terrorist attack on Gil’s wife and mother-in-law on their Montana ranch. The encounters between these ruthless maniacs and his wife are gems. Target America pays tribute to the many who have served with the following except: “despite what we’d like to believe,…men like Shannon and Pope don’t work for us. They serve a higher power-an ideal.

If you're looking military action escape this book is worth reading. I liked Mr. McEwen's "One Way Trip" novel a little more for edge-of-seat reading but "Target America" is not bad.
