I just wanted to tell you that I started reading the book this weekend, and I couldn't put it down...I went right through, virtually non-stop, until I had read it cover to cover. It is absolutely fabulous. I knew most of the 'medical' story, and I knew most of the 'human' side too, since I had been aware of what everyone was going through together. The book does such a wonderful job in really bringing the anguish and the joy and the whole emotional roller coaster into focus at a personal level. There is something wonderful about how all this has been artfully blended together in this book, so that it tells a story that is so much bigger than the sum of its parts. You wouldn't think that reading a book where I knew how the ending was going to come out would have had such an intense impact, but it really did. I truly couldn't restrain myself from turning pages. I'm glad to have read this one-of-a-kind story that no one else in the world can really understand, even today. All of us sideline onlookers now have a unique appreciation for all that Craig and Michelle endured together and accomplished together through the power of their love and faith.

TATTERED FLESH, RESILIENT SPIRIT was written so even those with a non-medical background would have a very good understanding of the very complex medical conditions. What I enjoyed even more though, was the story of faith and love between Craig and Michelle. It is refreshing to see how love can conquer all; love for God, love for one another, love for family. I read the book cover to cover in one day. Even though I know the ending, I couldn't put it down. It definitely gave me a window in to the severity of what was happening to them. What I think takes even more courage is that the Collison's wrote this whole experience and are sharing it with the world.

A compelling story of strength and courage, TATTERED FLESH, RESILIENT SPIRIT reveals the spiritual and physical journey of one young doctor as he faces a physician's greatest fear: becoming a patient in your own hospital. Dr. Craig Collison fights against overwhelming odds in his battle to survive a devastating infection with 'flesh eating' strep bacteria. A young pediatrician with only three months to go before finishing his grueling medical training, Dr. Collison and his family's hopes are soaring as they eagerly anticipate their future: a new baby, new house, and new job all beckon. Then, in a lightning strike, all their hopes are shrouded in despair. Dr. Collison's minor surgery to remove a growth on his back becomes the start of a life and death struggle. TATTERED FLESH, RESILIENT SPIRIT chronicles his journey through the physical torments of the ICU and Burn Unit as well as the emotional roller coaster he and his family experiences as they travel the stages of grief from denial to anger to acceptance and finally, recovery. The medical aspects are examined with an insider's insight as Dr. Collison reflects upon his illness, explains the medical terminology so many lay people find overwhelming and reveals the inner workings of a hospital from a patient's point of view. His first hand account is interwoven with journal entries provided by friends and family members as they visit during his lengthy ordeal and the Bible passages that gave his family the guidance and strength to go on. Medical professionals are loath to use the word 'miracle', often resorting to cliches such as 'beating the odds' or 'got lucky'. Partly this reflects our need to control and understand the events affecting our patients and guiding our decisions. It also stems from our frustration at being unable to promise the next patient the same 'miraculous' outcome. Dr. Collison's book reveals that a major and often unspoken factor in any patient's return to health is their own willingness to fight against overwhelming odds and to accept the strength and support lent to them by their friends, loved-ones and spiritual beliefs. These gifts of courage and perseverance are the true essence of any patient's survival and make TATTERED FLESH, RESILIENT SPIRIT an excellent book to share with anyone struggling against the seemingly insurmountable odds of a serious illness. TATTERED FLESH, RESILIENT SPIRIT is a triumph of spirit.
