This book provides basic Latin instruction along with a continuing story to read, which gives the student something to use his knowledge on. The story provides practice in the language, which is hard to do with a do-it-yourself book. The story is cute and initially very simple, of course, but it gives you practice at translating Latin that's more interesting than individual sentences. The pictures and other learning aids are also well done.

This book with two audio tapes gave me a 'jump-start' to the journey of learning Latin. It contains concise and sufficient grammatical explanations for a beginner in each chapter followed by interesting and humorous readings which make up a complete story throughout the chapters. I really appreciated the audio tapes by which I learned the rhythms of the spoken Latin language. The audio sounds helped me to retain the grammatical knowledge of the language. I think the audio material is more than a supplement; it's a 'sine qua non' to the book. One thing I missed is that the some portions of the story are ommited in the audio material. I was so disappointed especially when I found that typical grammatical applications in the story are missing from the audio version of the story.(e.g. just read and litsen to the chapters XI and XII.) Other than that, this book with audio material is a great choice for potential Latin lovers.
