This book presents an innovative preschool framework that both integrates literacy activities into content area lessons and bases instruction on individual students' needs. The authors developed the preschool framework after recognizing the benefits of teaching children reading and writing skills prior to kindergarten. Chapters 1-3 present the rationale behind the preschool framework, essential preschool components, and formal and informal assessments and curriculum outcomes. The remaining chapters cover a variety of topics, such as children's social and emotional development, oral language development and phonological awareness, early reading and writing, print concepts, instruction in content areas, and home-school connections.
