Ballenger's book is a wonderful tribute to educators who are faced with teaching students of diverse cultures. Ballenger uses the teacher research style to connect with students of the Haitian culture. She examines her personal teaching styles in order to create a successful learning environment among the Haitian students. Ballenger leaves us with the sense that the honoring of the students voices with literacy instruction is a powerful tool for meaningful teaching and learning.
