About the Author

Sri Nerode is first introduced as the residential leader of the Yogoda headquarters on Mount Washington in Los Angeles, California in the May-June 1929 edition of East-West magazine (p. 40). He had previously published in that magazine in 1928 while Center director for a brief time in Detroit. His activity there encouraged a female devotee to join Paramahansa Yogananda's circle; she became a stalwart disciple of Yogananda's named with the monastic title Durga Ma.

In the 1929 East-West magazine announcement the rationale for naming Sri Nerode to the post was given as follows: "The former leader, Swami Dhirananda, has gone away for a period of rest and study."

Sri Nerode had obected in writing to Yogananda about being called a "Brahmacharee" in the magazine announcement. Approximately five years later Yogananda relented and in January 1934 East-West issue Yogananda announced that "Brahmacharee Nerode will henceforth be called Sri Nerode; Brahmacharinee Nerode, his wife, who it also a Yogoda worker, will be called Srimati Nerode, and their little son, who has been initiated to Yogoda, will be known as Sri Anil.

Sri Anil is the sole survivor of his father and gives copyright permission for this publication.
