Overview

- Donation refusal is high in all the regions of Argentina. - The deficient operative structure is a negative reality that allows inadequate donor maintenance and organ procurement. - In more developed regions, there are a high number of organs which are not utilized. This is true for heart, liver and lungs. Small waiting lists for these organs probably reflect an inadequate economic coverage for these organ transplant activities. - There is a long waiting list for cadaveric kidney transplants, which reflect poor procurement and transplant activity. - Lack of awareness by many physicians leads to the denouncing of brain deaths. In spite of these factors, we can say that there has been a significant growth in organ procuration and transplantation in 1993, after the regionalization of the INCUCAI. Conclusions Is there a shortage of organs in Argentina? There may be. But the situation in Argentina differs from that in Europe, as we have a pool of organs which are not utilized (donation refusal, operational deficits, lack of denouncing of brain deaths). Perhaps, in the future, when we are able to make good use of all the organs submitted for transplantation, we will be able to say objectively whether the number of organs is sufficient or not. Most texts pertaining to telemedicine give only small sections devoted to telepathology. This book attempts to give a broad overview of telepathology past and present. In only 186 pages, the authors try to encompass all aspects of the new, emerging pathology discipline. These include comments and discussions about most of the current systems available and the future directions in the field concerning technology, and legal and economic issues. The purpose is not specifically spelled out in the preface, but the authors imply that this text is a good source of information for those interested in learning about telepathology and what research, academic, and private groups are currently participating in this area. As a beginning text for those unfamiliar with the field, this is a very good survey, but is not recommended for those already in the field. I believe this book is intended for those wishing to learn about telepathology -- its science, history, and participants. It serves as a small introductory text. All authors of this text are pioneers in this field and can speak ex cathedra . The books lightly covers all aspects of the subject which include history, science and physics, equipment research in academic and private locations, existing telepathology centers, current legal and economic obstacles, limitations of existing technology, and future directions. The chapter on existing telepathology sites both national and international gives the reader a feel for who is doing what and for how long they have been in the field. Again the feeling is that Europeans are far more committed at the present time to this technology, largely because of pathologist shortages and the economicdifferences and attitudes between the U.S. and Europe. An additional feature of the book is an electronic form in Adobe PDF format on CD-ROM. This book is a concise reference book for those wanting to learn more about telepathology. This is the only recent telepathology book that provides the reader with identification of the important players, and what the possible future directions might be. I feel it is intended for academic and private pathology departments who want to or plan to implement a telepathology service and need a beginning reference.
