CHAPTER 1

The ridiculous thread count made the new sheets feel like warm butter, which is why Daniel had been luxuriating in them since the faux church bells of his alarm had chimed five minutes earlier. Forcing himself fully awake, he rolled to his side and watched his sleeping wife. Cristina lay on her back, dark tresses falling across her face, one arm flung wide, the other curled overhead like Venus at Her Bath. Smooth brown skin, bowed eyelashes, that broad mouth, always ready with a smile or a wisecrack. Her pajama top was unbuttoned to her cleavage, revealing three blue pinpoint tattoos on her sternum: the radiation therapist's alignment marks, finally starting to fade.

For whatever reason this morning, the familiar sight of those three dots caught him off guard, a first-thing splash of emotion in the face. Cristina used to talk about getting them lasered off — it had been five years since they'd served their purpose — but over time she'd taken a shine to them. Her war paint.

Just like that he was back in the swampy memory of it. How she'd wake up breathless in the middle of the night, her heart racing, unable to draw a full breath. The bouts of nausea that kept her tethered to the couch for hours at a time, her athletic body softening. The doctor's appointment always a week away, rescheduled for this reason or that. And then the incident at the fundraiser, Cristina in a pale tile bathroom, coughing until her white sundress was speckled with bright blood, her wounded elegance calling to mind a pellet-shot dove. He'd cleaned her up with trembling hands as she leaned over the sink, weak-kneed and faint, and she'd said, "We're at an age now that when people get sick, it doesn't mean they have the flu."

Their relationship up until then had accelerated without brakes. They'd fallen into each other with an instant intimacy, laughing about the right things and serious about the rest. He'd met her in front of a painting at SFMOMA. They'd found themselves side by side, admiring the same piece. She'd gotten him talking, and Daniel had mentioned how his mother loved Lautrec and how he'd been drawn to the bright, bold colors of the dancing ladies even at a young age. He was going on a bit about the Frenchman's debt to Japanese woodcuts when Cris bit her lip thoughtfully, cocking her head to take in the row of paintings on the wall. "You can see how left out he felt," she said, and Daniel was brought up short with admiration.

Was it love at first conversation? Who could say? But after the drinks that followed their dinner, which followed their walk, which followed their spontaneous lunch in the museum's café, Daniel did know one thing: She was the first good reason he'd had to want to live forever.

And now, half a decade later, his feelings were undiminished. At the cusp of forty, and still he got a heady schoolboy rush watching her twist her dripping hair up into a towel or sing under her breath while chopping cilantro or gather her pantyhose around her thumbs as she poised a foot for entry.

He set his hand gently on the slope of her upper chest over the three dots, feeling for her heartbeat. There. And there. And there.

She stirred, those lashes parting to show her rich brown eyes. She smiled, and then her gaze pulled south, taking in his flat hand pressed to her chest. A puzzled furrow of the brow as she frowned down. "What are you feeling?" she asked.

"Gratitude," he said.

Daniel ran the steep slopes of Pacific Heights with the same intensity with which he'd tackled them as a high-school wrestler trying to make weight, except now with the complaints of a thirty-nine-year-old body mediating the pace. Someone had once remarked that when you got tired of walking around San Francisco, you could always lean against it. He felt like leaning now. Instead he loped along Vallejo to the edge of the Presidio and jogged the regal Lyon Street Steps, lined with meticulously planted gardens and cast in the shadows of towering trees. He passed a cluster of teenagers up from the night before, smoking their cigarettes and practicing their pouts, and a few early-morning boot-campers he recognized, traders and i-bankers out to break a sweat before the market opened.

Ahead a younger man with rock-hard calves and tapered lats bounded up the steps, and Daniel dared himself to catch up. The stairs blurred underfoot, his muscles straining, taking two at a time, driving into the face of the challenge, and then it was no longer leisure but something more. The age-old urge fired his belly.

Be faster. Be stronger. Be better.

Whistling past the guy, he kept on, legs burning, breath scouring his throat, the hill like a wall stretching up and up. But he wouldn't stop, wouldn't slow, not even after the man's footsteps receded into memory. It was never about the man, of course, or this challenge on this day. It was about appeasing the chorus of voices in his head, the ones that had always told him that if he ever wanted a life he could call his own, he'd have to fight his way to it.

Sweat falls from Daniel's locks, dotting the wrestling mat at his feet. The gymnasium is packed, ridiculous for a junior-high meet, but it is that kind of school and these are those kinds of parents. The headgear's strap digs into his chin, and he tastes salt from where he nearly put his tooth through his lip on the last takedown. But he'd completed the move and gotten near-fall points to boot. If he has one thing going for him, it is that he won't allow pain to be a deterrent. His shaggy-haired, pale-skinned opponent is more developed, with real biceps, but even at age twelve Daniel fights as if his life is on the line, as if he is trying to escape from somewhere. He is winning 5–2 with less than a minute on the clock.

They circle each other warily. The kid takes a few open-hand swipes at Daniel's head, but they're halfhearted. His bowed shoulders and weary eyes show that he has already conceded the meet. But Daniel doesn't want to win like this. He wants to clash until the bell. He wants to hear the definitive slap of the referee's hand against the mat, announcing the pin, showing that he didn't back down from a challenge by coasting to the finish line.

A whistle halts the action — the kid's laces are untied. Daniel bounces on his toes to keep loose, his slender frame jiggling. Someone has the bright idea to enhance the time-out by blaring Kenny Loggins's "Danger Zone" through the antiquated speakers.

As the boy crouches to adjust his shoes, Daniel turns to take in the bleachers. There's his mother up in the stands, out of place among all those sweatshirts and done-up soccer-mom faces, her fingers doing an impatient caterpillar crawl along the sleeve of her fur coat, itching for a cigarette. Severe lipstick. Her pulse beating in the paper-thin skin at her temple. She notes his gaze, but her expression does not change, and he knows that her dead-even stare has everything to do with why winning by points is not enough.

The match goes live again, and they circle and slap, the other kid shuffling, exhausted. Their shoes chirp against the mat. The smell of rubber and sweat fills Daniel's nostrils. He watches the kid's legs, the angle of the feet, the bend of his knee. They shuffle-step some more. The clock ticks down, and then — there — he sees his opening. He lunges in for the fireman's carry, but his sole skids on an invisible puddle of sweat and then he is off balance, flipped on his shoulders, and the bigger kid is lying across him. Daniel bucks and flails but cannot wriggle free. Sooner than seems plausible, the referee's palm strikes the mat near his face and it is over.

In the locker-room shower, he replays the moment, except this time he doesn't slip — he hoists his larger opponent in the fireman's carry and dumps him on his back, and the crowd roars, and there's his mother, on her feet, cheering, her face lit with triumph.

He exits the building, his hair still damp. The sky is San Francisco slate, overcast and gloomy, and the air bites at him through the slacks and thin sweater of his school uniform. His mother waits, leaning against the car, her arms crossed against the cold, wearing an expression of disgust. No, not disgust — concealed rage.

"You had him on points," she says. "You just had to run the clock."

"I know," Daniel says.

"You could have had the medal."

"I know."

Evelyn's gloved hands light a slender cigarette, lift it to her bloodred lips.

"You make things hard on yourself."

Daniel averts his gaze. In the car, behind the wheel, James is little more than a hat and a shadow. He stares straight ahead. This is not his business, and he has a paycheck to earn.

Daniel says, "I know."

Evelyn shoots a disciplined stream of smoke into the darkening evening and opens the rear door to climb in. Daniel takes a step forward, but she halts midway into the car and turns back to him.

"Losers walk," she says.

The door closes neatly behind her, and the car purrs up the street.

Daniel watches until it disappears. Blowing into his cupped hands, he begins the long walk home.

Pausing at the top of the Lyon Street Steps, panting, Daniel turned and looked back. Far below, the younger man he'd blown past struggled up the final leg of his run. Daniel took a few seconds to catch his breath, the raised sweatshirt hood damp around his head, eucalyptus clearing his lungs, stinging his nostrils. The summit afforded a view across the vast forest of the Presidio toward Sea Cliff, where Evelyn presided over her estate, looking down on the city.

He took the stairs hard back down and ran for home, dodging curbside recycling barrels. Victorian mansions alternated with Mission Revivals and the occasional Chateau, the gleaming façades making clearer than ever how Pacific Heights earned its nicknames — either the "Gold Coast" or "Specific Whites," depending on which demographic was weighing in.

Daniel and Cristina's place, though several blocks downsized from Billionaires' Row, was still stunning. Average-sized by the standards of any reasonable town, the midcentury house was a narrow three-story rise of concrete and dark wood with a square patch of front lawn, shoulder-width alleys on either side, and a matchbook courtyard framing a black-pebble fire pit in the back.

Daniel entered, tossing his keys onto the accent table beside the miniature Zen garden with its white sand groomed into hypnotic patterns. Up the stairs to the wide-open second story, the view making its grand entrance through the floor-to-ceiling steel-framed windows in a fashion that — still — made his breath hitch. Backdropping the kitchen, a cascading vista down the hill to the Bay, the Golden Gate forging magnificently into the craggy headlands of Marin, Angel Island floating in an ice-cream haze of fog. And on the other side, beyond the little sitting area they called a living room, a panorama captured the dip of Fillmore and the Haight and the houses beyond popping up like pastel dominoes, forming a textured rise to the one visible Twin Peak. Sutro Tower loomed over it all, sticking out of the earth like a giant tuning fork.

He climbed to their bedroom on the third floor. Red pen clenched between her teeth, Cris was proofreading a printout and wriggling into a pair of jeans at the same time. Her eyeglasses were shoved atop her head, forgotten.

"Your op-ed?" he asked.

She nodded, distracted, not looking up.

"It was great two drafts ago."

"It has to be better than great. It has to be a brimstone avalanche of influence that convinces the planning commission that it is not worth their political while to displace sixty low-income families so their cronies can build faux-Italian town houses."

Cristina's job as a community organizer for nonprofit tenants' societies had grown harder each year since the aggressive gentrification of the dot-com era. The hot-dotters had taken over vacant lots and homeless squats, pressing out each fold and wrinkle of the city like an expanding waistline. Now the trendy restaurants and bars of the Divisadero were creeping into Western Addition, and developers were picking off buildings not officially designated as projects and protected with federal subsidies. Including the sixty-unit apartment complex Cris was currently fighting to preserve.

She scribbled at the sheet. "They bought off the asshole landlord, who's helping drive the tenants out. No repairs, nothing. There's a family of six in there that's had a broken toilet for a month, so they have to use the neighbors'. Two black drag queens. You can imagine how that's working out. There are elderly couples with nowhere to go. I had a single mom in yesterday, crying, won't be able to afford to live in her own neighborhood. A five-generation Chinese-Filipino family on the third floor —"

"Five generations?"

"There's a great-great-aunt in there somewhere."

"Maybe the cupboard."

Her face lightened. For an instant. "This is boring."

"Not even a little."

She slashed out another paragraph. "I have two volunteers and a college intern. We spend six months organizing through churches and schools to get thirty thousand signatures, and then some associate" — she spit the word — "bundles two hundred grand in contributions to the right city supervisor and tilts the whole goddamned seesaw the other way."

Her accent edged into her words when she was mad. She sank onto the bed, chewing through the cap of the red pen. Having grown up in a similar apartment building in the Mission, she took her job personally.

"The power brokers," she said. "They matter more than we do."

"Don't say that," he told her.

She looked at him evenly, not a trace of self-pity in her eyes. "But it's true."

CHAPTER 2

The heat had been shut off again last week, and the walls of the box apartment held the San Francisco cold greedily — the place might as well have been refrigerated. A scorched comet marred the plasterboard above the uneven stove where a grease fire had flared and died. No door to the bathroom. Toilet missing its lid, a prison bowl. The concrete floor like ice even through their shoes, even through the thin mattress they shared each night, fully clothed.

If he hit her just below the left cheek, they'd discovered, it brought up a pleasing raised bruise without causing any real damage. She stood patiently, exposed, her face turned slightly. Waiting. He executed the first blow, taking care not to put too much weight behind it. Her head snapped back, and she smiled, her eyes dazed and distant.

His life, it seemed, had become nothing more than a series of tough runs laid end to end. Lately it had been flipping burgers and onions, the stink of the grill clinging to him, in his pores, coming off his clothes, filling the shower stall when the lukewarm water drizzled over his head. Nine bucks and change an hour, forty-nine cents taken out for Social Security, Medicare at twelve, and SDI — whatever the hell that was — chiseling off another couple pennies. They were almost through the canned meat, but he'd be paid tomorrow and then there'd be fresh cigarettes, a few packs of hot dogs, gas for the tank, a gallon or two of milk. If things got too bad, he could dip into the stash, but that money was reserved for the Purpose, and the Purpose was everything. And so they'd held their vow to abstain even through a few daylong stints with no food at all. That morning he'd found a still-smoldering butt on the sidewalk, and he'd crouched in a bus shelter and smoked it down, watching all the well-heeled folks traipse by.

She was trembling there in the semi-dark, thin arms at her sides. Spread across the floor behind her were their secret plans — maps with red circles, schedules gleaned from months of surveillance, confidential files painstakingly collected.

"Ready?" he asked.

"Mouth now," she said. "Come on, baby."

He palmed the back of her head and struck her, a hard tap of the knuckles, enough to split her lip. Her grin gleamed darkly, red filling the spaces, framing he r lower teeth. She tasted her lips, her loose gaze radiating a deep, almost sexual ache. "More," she said. "Give me more."

Gregg Hurwitz can really write. This is a terrific mystery that never loses momentum. His best yet.

I didn't want to finish the book so quickly. Wanted to savor it but I just couldn't stop reading. As usual, Gregg Hurwitz had me spellbound to the end. Without a doubt one of the best mystery writers of today. Thanks for another awesome book!!!!

I've read several of Gregg Hurwitz's books and really enjoyed this one. Kept me guessing until the end with lots of interesting characters and plot shifts. Very good reading!

Great story of murder, suspense and mystery: TELL NO LIES is a contemporary mystery storyline of murder and suspense. This is my first Gregg Hurwitz novel. The focus is on thirty something Daniel Brasher. Growing up privileged Daniel thumbed his nose at his family’s prestige and wealth and ventured into the world of psychology, group counseling with one-time rapists and thieves. A married man in a loving and committed relationship with his wife, three times per week Daniel leads and challenges a group of ex-cons and parolees to look within themselves at the who and what in their lives. But soon, Daniel will find himself on the receiving end of mysterious envelopes containing misdirected threats of murder and revenge. The messages are cryptic, threatening and contain deadlines for action. We are introduced to the colorful and diverse group members through a series of one on one interactions where each participant must face the reality of what they have done and how to make amends. And in doing so, the reader as well as our hero will discover that not everyone is who he or she pretends to be. Everyone has a secret to tell. As the storyline unfolds our hero Daniel is thrust into a world of grisly murders and psychotic killers. The local police detectives have nothing on Daniel as he seems to be able to ferret out the next victim before the authorities have time to blink and in doing so, Daniel places himself into a position where the killer begins to pull Daniel into the mystery that is unfolding before his eyes. But all too soon, the threats become personal and through a series of his own investigations Daniel will discover that the killer intends to make Daniel suffer in the same way the killer has suffered in the past. This is a story of murder and revenge; a story where the killer believes he has been betrayed down to the deepest part of his soul; and a story where one man’s grief turns ugly with the need to avenge a death that he believes could have been prevented if not for the money behind the rich and powerful. Tell No Lies is also a study of the sociological implications of who has the power over life and death; and the greed of big money, big business and big medicine. Gregg Hurwitz pulls the reader into a storyline of twists and turns. There is limited foul language; the murder scenes are not as graphically descriptive as are some other storylines I have read, but they do leave nothing to the imagination. The group of counseling characters are an interesting mix of cons, thieves, gang bangers and screw ups who through one reason or another have an axe to grind about how society and the ‘man’ have ruined their lives. And in the end, each will face their demons and come out of the sessions for better or for worse. TELL NO LIES is a dark tale where one man’s choices will snowball into a story of revenge: where money and power have all of the control; and where the lives of everyone you love will hang in the balance when horrendous grief knows no boundaries or ends. Tell No Lies takes the reader on a trail of mysterious messages, missing bodies, murder victims and revenge. Gregg Hurwitz writes an interesting story that will captivate the mystery lover in all readers.

Gregg Hurwitz seems to never write anything but a great book. This one may not be his best, but it is still better than almost any other author can write. Like all of his books it draws you into the story so totally you almost live it. This one is set in San Francisco, so if you love that city as I do it is a very special treat. It includes a sub plot of a psychological therapy group for felons, where you sit and listen as they open their hearts reluctantly, drawing you into their stories too. Yes, I had teary eyes many times before finishing this.

I just finished reading The Survivor...That was one of the best books I have read in a very long time. Honestly I didnt want it to end...It's like I'm right there with Nate,Janie and Cielle. This is the first book I have read written by Greg Hurwitz and I am hooked..I just checked out You're Next and cant wait to get taken away in these pages....

Daniel Brasher is winding down his job as a therapist to released criminals when he starts getting death threats in his inner office main - death threats aimed at other people. Can he figure out what is happening before the killer turns to him? This author always creates great plots and outstanding characters and pull you in, and this book is no exception. It's another amazing thrill ride from start to finish.
