When I read the synopsis of this series I was instantly drawn. The Napoleonic War but with dragons? Sounds good. That was an understatement. This series is a beautiful story of an unlikely friendship. Every character has his/her own story or personality making the story more real. When reading I sometimes forget that wait, there are no such things as dragons. But this book describes life with dragons in such a sensible and realistic way it really makes you believe there are such things as dragons in wars. The main characters are so strong and independent and amazing. The two main make me laugh, cry, and really feel touched by such a beautiful friendship. And it isn't a human animal story, you are reminded that it is a human dragon relationship but its not absurd like how some animal human friendships are. The story is so grabbing its hard to put the book down. You get so involved with the story and so emotional for the characters you easily get sucked in and feel the same emotions as the characters. I recommend this to any reader. If you like fantasy, history, fiction or even non-fiction. The writing is lovely, the story is amazing, and the characters become your family. One of my favorite books of all time.

When I first heard of this series, I cringed, because much as I like historical fiction, people usually get it all wrong. A friend introduced me to the series, lending me his own set, and I haven't been able to put the books down. I like how different languages are constantly thrown into the mix. I'm not quite a polyglot yet, but I love how quickly Temeraire picks up new languages. My one critique regarding this series is a matter of grammar. The books are littered with, "Try and [insert verb]" when the correct structure is, "Try to [insert verb]." One cannot "try and do" something, unless the speaker is being facetious, and doesn't care whether the subjects of the sentence are capable or not - it just needs to be done. The second is the use of the word "cannot". Example: "Cannot we join them?" This use of "cannot" is ALWAYS incorrect. It needs to be contracted to "can't". If the writer does not want to contract it, then the correct phrasing is, "Can we not join them?"These are mistakes that most everyone seems to make in their writing. I don't like it, but it doesn't detour me from enjoying the story.

This is one of the best series I have ever read! I can't imagine why only one other person has deigned to write a review when Peter Jackson, director of "The Lord of the Ring" film series is trying to produce these as blockbusters, which they will be.

Naomi Novik has taken a very exciting part of history few in the U.S. have ever bothered with and injected into it new life by imagining that the Napoleonic wars included the aerial warfare of--dragons. It seems that all men love epic battles, and all women love dragons, so why haven't more people read these books? The protagonist, an aviator committed to one dragon for life, is as romantic a hero and military man as anybody could ever want--and women are aviators, too! Novik writes with strength, tenderness, and wit. Don't people read anymore???? I can't recommend another product like this, because there isn't another product like this. Yes, it's also history (here gag with a spoon if you must), but it's also fantasy. It's just brilliant; go forth and READ it.
