This is the 2nd book in the series. It is a historical romance (with all the restraints society puts on ladys and gents) mixed with a little paranormal action and suspense. The male and female main characters both show great character development throughout the book. Main Disappointment: The series is about the 5 Marlowe children and this is the last book Boyle has written since '09...so yeah :(

I've read many of Elizabeth Boyle's historical romances novels and adore her style and stories. This 2nd book of the Marlowe series is different with it's paranormal elements and darker potentials. I was fascinated at the extra layers and depth that could be revealed of other worlds and dangers. I was caught up in the story (trusting that Elizabeth would deliver an awesome ending) but truly wasn't seeing how to get these characters out of their dilemma! Every time I thought I had it figured out, nope, something different happened. What an awesome story!

This book had me spent. I have read her previous titles. And this one was on the mark. The love scenes, as well as the action had me weak. A definate page turner. Ya heard.

In 1810 Lady Hermione Marlowe has loved the rogue Lord Rockhurst, but the rake seems to ignore her except with quick fleeting glances of desire when he thinks she is not looking. She wonders how to make him see her without causing a scandal and wishes to learn his deepest secrets as that will bolster her chances.------------------ She is stunned when the ring she wears makes her invisible. She follows Rockhurst and learns what her heart has been saying that he is not a scoundrel but instead he is London¿s protector, but she wonders who protects the protector. She vows her. When she saves his life coming out of nowhere, he calls her his 'Shadow'. As he tries to get her to back off from the danger of the night as only the Paratus would understand, Hermione refuses to heed his plea instead she demands he allow her to join him in love protecting the innocent from evil.-------------------- Few authors use secret or mistaken identities as well as Elizbath Boyle consistently does (see THIS RAKE OF MINE and LOVE LETTERS FROM A DUKE). This time the superb historical author has her intrepid heroine believe in her heart there is much more depth to the wastrel she loves (sort of believing Percy is the Scarlet Pimpernel with all proof to the contrary that he is a dandy). Hermione obtains the gimmick that lets her prove her theory with ¿stalking¿ her hero inside of a great Regency romantic adventure thriller while fans will be TEMPTED BY THE NIGHT to buy Ms. Boyle¿s backlist.-------------- Harriet Klausner

I was disappointed. While none of the excerpts give hint to the supernatural aspect of the book it was a pleasant surprise at first but it quickly fell flat due to a lack of any real development. The heroine lacks personality and the hero lacks intrigue. All in all I'm the only real surprise was the fact that I bothered to finish it.

Amazing read! Boyle draws the reader into the character's lives and one cannot help but feel for them as they struggle with the problems they face.
