Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kathleen Karr
Jean Marzollo's countdown picture book is ready for the Christmas season. A group of animal friends perch on a snowy hill raptly awaiting the presents, addressed to each of the 10, scattered across the next hill. One by one, the presents are opened to Marzollo's easy-rhyming text. ("9 little presents-Owl can't wait . . . Owl gets a vest! Now there are eight.") After everyone has been pleasantly surprised, there is still the mystery of who secretly left the gifts. Could there be someone hiding in the snow? That's for the little readers to find out. Meanwhile, Marzollo has illustrated her story simply. Each boxed present has the image as well as the name of an animal attached, useful for basic vocabulary skills. Her plain blue sky over white snow remains static opposite the warmer, highlighted picture of each delighted animal, then comes alive with the snowflakes that bring the Secret Santa. It is non-threateningly generic, but still a nice little book. Reviewer: Kathleen Karr

PreS-Gr 1

A cheerful Christmas countdown is told in rhyme as 10 cuddly critters open presents from a secret source. Children will enjoy identifying the various woodland animals (Mouse gets earmuffs, Owl gets a vest, etc.) and reading the name labels on the different packages. One by one an animal is showcased on the left page and one less present is shown on the facing page. "Who's our Secret Santa? The animals want to know./''Tis I,' says Santa Bear./'I was hiding in the snow!'" Marzollo's watercolor and ink illustrations are appropriately soft and colorful. The last spread has a memory game for children to guess again which presents came in which boxes, adding to the fun of this simple satisfying story.-Madeline J. Bryant, Los Angeles Public Library

Kirkus Reviews
Marzollo, the author of the clever rhymes in the I Spy series, offers a reverse counting book for toddlers and preschoolers. The first spread shows a group of ten forest animals sitting on a snow-covered hillside gazing in anticipation at ten wrapped presents, each marked with an animal's name. As succeeding pages are turned, another animal opens a present and the number of remaining presents decreases. All the Christmas gifts are items of warm outdoor clothing, from mittens for the porcupine to a tail warmer for the squirrel. The secret Santa who left the presents is a friendly bear shown on the cover, who arrives at the story's conclusion along with a snowstorm. A final page presents a matching game with the present boxes and the items of clothing. Toddlers will like the simple, rhyming story and the sketchy, childlike illustrations, and preschoolers will like the reverse counting game. Teachers and librarians will find this a good fit for story hours about counting or Christmas presents, although its trim size limits its use to smaller audiences. (Picture book. 1-5)
