Gabriel LaFarge was a yourng french girl in a convent just about to take her vows to God when her father sells her to the handsome Phillipe St.Cyr(wealthy plantation owner). Gabby doesn't know whether to love this dark handsome tempermental man, or hate him for his coolness towards her. This book keeps you on a fast pace journey of a tortured love affair. Begins in france, then takes you to the British/American war in New Orleans, then takes you to the beautiful and majestic island Martinique, where Phillipe owns his plantation. You wonder if things will ever pan out for these two lovers, which is why I think it is awesome. I love books with danger as well as passion and romance. You will find all of that in this book. I highly recommend this book. I read it in one weekend! I could not put it down to even sleep!
I don't see how this can be called a romance novel, Gabby was treated horribly by her husband from the start, there was rape abuse all through the story, not to mention the multiple affairs throughout the book by both Gabby and Phillipe. She was brought up in a convent yet went willingly to other men and his affairs were too many to count. I don't see how the two of them ended up together so much in love. Although I love all other Connie Mason novels this was a huge dissapointment.
I read this book about 14 years ago and the story has always stayed with me. I would recommened this book to the readers that like their stories with everything from hate, love and jealousy in them. It's also every sexy.
