Wonderfully written account of a physically and emotionally demanding journey into the unfamiliar. The dark humor, along with the detailed and sometimes surprising observations made by Kennan, makes this Siberian adventure tale a great read. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in reading about Russian history and culture, or in travel literature.
This adventure tale is about an area and culture that seems very inaccessible, even today. George Kennan and his fellow travelers journeyed to Siberia in order to bridge the gap by telegraphically connecting the United States and Europe. In the end they failed, but this trip resulted in a terrific cultural snapshot. I would highly recommend this book for people who enjoy travel literature, as well as Russian cultural history.
