Terminated by Simon Wood

Stephen Tarbell needed that promotion. But they had to go and give the job to his supervisor, Gwen Farris. Now Tarbell has had enough—and he’s about to put Gwen on notice. She has two choices: give him a glowing review on his performance evaluation or suffer the consequences.

Gwen has already survived one violent attack, fifteen years ago. But even that experience couldn’t prepare her for Tarbell’s relentless fury. Pulling a knife on her was just the beginning. Like a sadist peeling the wings off a helpless fly, Tarbell is determined to pick apart her life using every means of physical and psychological torment. The company’s security firm says they’ll handle the situation, but whose side are they really on? And how do you stop a psychopath so consumed by hate he thinks he’s the one being persecuted?

An ominous thriller set in a world where workplace insecurity meets violent obsession, Simon Wood’s Terminated grabs the reader by the throat and never lets go.

Murder! Madness! Mayhem! Psychological torture! Terminated delivers all of the above and throws in some morals! His short stories and novels all have one thing in common. They are UnPutDownAble!!! Ken Bruen, author of PRIEST made the comment about Simon ."He writes like a dark demented angel." When you finish Terminated, you will agree. Gwen Farris got a promotion and a Psychopath as a bonus. Stephen Tarbell thought Gwen stole the promotion and he is going to do everything he can to make her suffer. His plans include taking everything from her.job, family and the ultimate sacrifice HER LIFE. Gwen's status with the company changes directions from victim to liar. She stands up and fights back to protect her greatest assets.Family! When you finish the book, it leaves you with one question. How would I react to a Stephen Tarbell in my life?

If you like twists and turns, and a roller coaster ride, Simon Wood has done it again. This book is great for mystery lovers, action loveres, and anyone who enjoys great characterization and a finely tuned novel. I recommend Simon Wood to everyone. His characters are crisp and real. The action makes you want to stay up late to finish reading because you don't have enough time during the day. After reading Terminated, I decided to get the book for my boss (but tell her not to read anything into our working relationship because of my book choice). Simon never disappoints, except in one area. I wish he had more books out, but he can remedy that by still writing.

One of the things I appreciate the most about Simon Wood's books is his ability to create a story you can't put down. Terminated is no exception. Expect the plot to keep you on your toes, don't expect to stop thinking about it when you're done reading it. The bad guy is so well crafted that the entire time you are reading, you involuntarily keep one eye on the front door. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is up for a good thriller...you won't be disappointed.

Both my husband and I read this book and couldn't put it down. It's a good book all the way through, including the ending. I hope all of Simon Woods' books are as good -- can't wait to read another one! I certainly do recommend this book!

This was definitely an emotional roller coaster ride. At times I would have to stop reading/listening due to how much anger and frustration the situation caused. This is not a bad thing. This tells me the author did his job because he caused a genuine response to the reader. It definitely isn't boring. Poor Gwen was attacked from every angle. Not only from her assailant, but her employer, coworkers and the people that were supposed to protect her. If you are a victim of an assault or stalker, this may cause triggers. It did for me when I didn't even know I had an issue with my past experience. If I were Gwen, I would be going to the media and a lawyer about my employer not protecting me and wanting to not involve the police. They never hesitated when they thought the tables had turned and she was stalking her coworker who was the guilty party. But things like this almost never get the justice they deserve. Out of all Simon's books I've read/listened to so far, this is my least favorite. I think because it reminded me too much of my stalker and harasser. By the end, I was ready for Gwen to just say kill me already. There's so much I want to explain but there's no way to give the kind of review to do this justice because it would require revealing spoilers. There was someone in the end that helped her that was a nice twist. I sort of saw her using him but didn't know how well it would be figured in. Well, actually two people. I was sad about what happened to one character that I really liked. I was screaming NO at the author and flinging my iPad across the room! He knows how to get my blood pressure up! I bet he's laughing right now as he reads this review. **Raspberries to you, Mr Wood!** lol. I wasn't crazy about the narrator. She was good, don't get me wrong. Great with the female voices. But most of the male voices sounded the same. I liked his other narrators better. I think I would like this narrator with other types of books. If you like thrillers and fly by the edge of your seat, you will love this! **Side note** I just read some other reviews of this book. It's easy to get frustrated with Gwen and say she made stupid decisions, but unless you have ever been a victim, you don't know for sure what you would do.**

One innocent meaning of the term 'terminated' has to do with losing one's job; as we all know, there is another more ominous one. Those two very different definitions become intertwined as a workplace decision becomes life-threatening in this fast-paced tale of suspense by Simon Wood, who has already shown that he is a master of the genre. Gwen Farris could have had no idea that her critical performance evaluation of Stephen Tarbell would have the effect it did. Not that poor evaluations are ever expected to be gracefully received, but no one could have predicted the potentially lethal fallout from this one. Employed by a pharmaceutical company for the last eighteen months, six months ago Gwen was promoted to the position of Manager of Quality Assurance, a promotion Tarbell believes should have been his. Now, his very job may hang in the balance. Not satisfied with threatening Gwen with a knife if she doesn't change the report in his favor, Tarbell determines to take apart Gwen's life as she knows it, and perhaps take her life, literally, as well. Gwen, happily married and with an adorable three-year-old daughter she adores, has faced mortal danger before. She was the survivor of a violent crime fifteen years prior, the man who kidnapped and attacked her [leaving her for dead] coming up for parole as the tale opens, which only adds to the feeling of vulnerability which threatens to undo Gwen. The suspense continues to mount, and just when the reader feels the worst of Gwen's ordeal might be behind her, the author manages one twist after another to keep the pages turning. Another winner for Simon Wood, and it is recommended.

Gwen is a strong willed, sometimes bull-headed woman determined to keep her family safe and secure. She's never been one to run from her problems, not years ago when faced with a frightening and violent situation, and certainly not now when faced with a disgruntled co-worker. But she soon learns that playing by the rules isn't going to work, and it won't keep her alive. Simon Wood has surely created another reader favorite with his book, Terminated. I admit I was excited and eager to read this story, having already become a fan of his work after reading Paying the Piper, and I was not disappointed! Mr. Wood is able to grab the readers attention rather quickly, making these thrilling stories almost realistic. I found that while reading Terminated, I was continuously in the mind frame of "What would I do?" or "What if it were my family?", flipping through the pages with anticipation, unable to put this book down! I highly recommend giving Terminated a read! The suspense is incredibly intense and will keep your interest from beginning to end! Hazel O'Shea Written for the Juniper Grove blog
