Overview

Back to his normal life, Larry Barnes thinks he'll never again see the Portal—a strange device that took him to a parallel universe—until a beautiful woman appears and begs for his help.

The mysterious preacher Larry previously encountered in the parallel universe is in trouble on another world, and only Larry can save him.

Against his better judgment, Larry enters the Portal, and finds himself in a desperate battle against a priesthood trying to kill the preacher—and now him.

While struggling to defeat the priests and then return home, Larry senses he may have powers he never dreamed of, and that his fate is inextricably linked to the preacher...and the Portal.

What a different take on an alternate history story. While I have not read book 1, the second book was easy to follow. I thought the pertinent information from book 1 was covered, so I understood why Larry goes through a portal to attend "Preacher" Affron's trial on his home world of Terra. Plus Larry was a teenager who was a bit bored after coming back from the first book's adventure. The reason I chose to read book 2 was it sounded interesting and I was not disappointed. Well written, I was hooked after the first chapter and had to see how it would end. Full of twists and turns, action and surprises, it was a great read. Larry's incites and inner monologues while running through a world that was based on the old Roman empire were a hoot. Plus liked his "traveling" companions, some from Terra and Carmody from the first book who Larry found on Terra at Affron's trial. I thought it was a fun read. Will have to check out other books by Bowker. I received a copy of this book from eBook Discovery. I voluntarily review this book. This is my honest review.

A worthy sequel to Portal, with top-notch writing, interesting characters, and an alternate Earth that makes you wonder what other worlds there are in the multiverse. This is a "young adult" novel in the way the Harry Potter books were--for readers of all ages who remember what it was like to be a young adult.
