Adevarul este ca, pentru oamenii epocii victoriene, personajele lui Hardy puteau sa para adevarati monstri. In realitate, existen­ta lor este, de cele mai multe ori, banala. Sunt oameni oarecare, cu defecte obis­nui­te: pot fi betivi, egoisti, violenti, pot fi ingrati cu cei care ii iubesc sau, dimpotriva, sa le atribuie insusiri nemaiintalnite celor de care sunt indragostiti. Dragostea lor e insa nimicitoare: ea ii mistuie deopotriva pe cel care o nutreste, si pe obiectul dragostei lui, incheindu-se totdeauna cu moarte sau ne­bunie. Nici cei care o refuza nu se pot salva. Un vant blestemat sufla peste oamenii cartilor lui Thomas Hardy: toti devin victime ale patimii si, cautandu-si izbavirea, se pierd in intinderile landei Egdon. Poate insa ca marea lor infirmitate, e lipsa marilor visuri. Singura excep­tie, in aceasta privinta, e Tess. Dan Grigorescu
