Twenty million people call Texas "home". And what a home it is. It has four regions covering over 260,000 square miles, each with a climate all its own. Whether you like country music, Tejano music, or even classical music, there is a band playing it live somewhere in Texas. Festivals celebrating the varied cultures occur every weekend across this, the second largest state. While you are driving from festival to festival, take time to admire the mountains, hills, beaches, prairies, woodlands, and cityscapes that you encounter along the way. Chances are it will change every few miles. Enjoy the historical markers along the Texas roadways documenting the great events that are presented in this book. Capstone Press has done an admirable job presenting Texas as the warm, friendly place that it is. Take a look at this book, and I am sure that we will be seeing you here in person someday. This book is part of the "One Nation" series. 2003, Capstone Press

Gr 3-5-Revised editions, these report-oriented titles are easier than World Book entries. Each one begins with a chapter on a special feature of the state (New York's hook is city subways; Texas's stereotype, country music), followed by chapters on the land, people, history, businesses, and tourism. Appendixes include time lines, famous folks, vocabulary (such as "borough" for New York and "longhorn" for Texas), and an arbitrary handful of Internet sites. The texts are comprised of dust-dry declarative sentences and suffer from sloppy editing when, for example, the statement "Hispanics make up 32 percent of the Texas population" faces a photograph with the caption "One out of every five Texans is Hispanic." Prefaced with a few "fast facts," the titles are nevertheless attractive, simplistic-by-design ("Texas is a big state") entries into the colorful world of nonfiction. They might serve as stepping stones to more rigorous encyclopedia entries or single treatments found in other series such as "America the Beautiful" (Children's).-John Sigwald, Unger Memorial Library, Plainview, TX Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
