This book did not prepare for the EC-12 161 AT ALL. It was a waste of time and money. The book did not cover any material that is on the test.
I read and studied this book. If I had been given a test just on this book I would have made at least a 95. When I went to take the real test that this book claims to prepare you for I was unprepared for many of the questions. Yes, by studying this book I did know more than I would have going into the test blind but the book lacks specifics and details for which the test requires knowledge. I would recommend using the topics from the list on the ECS website and coming up with your own study materials. Which will require many more trips to the librarly than just simply purchasing this book. The effort though will be much more useful than this book was.
Please read the other post regarding this book. Every word is true. I did pass the test but I can honestly say that this book had nothing to do with it. The information is mostly irrelevant, and the information that is relevant is outdated.
The quality of writing in this book is anything but professional quality. It seems to have been written by a group of college undergraduates as an assignment by their professor. It is rife with grammatical and syntactical errors, and many words are misspelled (or, as they would term it, 'miss pelt' - I am not kidding). There are several examples of the same information being repeated word-for-word in different sections of the book. The latter part of the book is composed of sample test questions, and several of the answers simply do not match the questions. Whoever wrote, edited and typed the manuscript for this book should be made to take their own test I'm sure they would fail. Don't waste your $70 on this piece of garbage. The study guides provided by the SBEC (the Texas teacher certification authority) are professionally done and far more helpful.
