Thais of Athens by Ivan Yefremov, Maria K.

At seventeen, she was a pride of Athens. At twenty-six, she participated in Alexander the Great's Persian campaign. Before the age of thirty-five, she became the queen of Egypt in Memphis. A remarkable woman. A remarkable life.

The beautiful hetaera Thais was a real woman who inspired poets, artists and sculptors in Athens, Memphis, Alexandria, Babylon and Ecbatana. She traveled with Alexander the Great's army during his Persian campaign and was the only woman to enter the capitol of Persia - Persepolis.

Love, beauty, philosophy, war, religion - all that and more in a historic masterpiece by Ivan Yefremov.

About the Author

Ivan Yefremov was an outstanding paleontologist, historian and science fiction writer. Frequently ridiculed in the west for the romantic description of communism in his best-known novel "Andromeda Nebula", Yefremov was, in fact, frequently at odds with the Soviet government. His later, more profound novels exploring the injustices and abuses of totalitarian societies such as the former USSR and China, spent more time on the various publishers' shelves than they did at the printing press. Yefremov's works such as "Hour of the Bull" and "Razor Blade" were out of circulation for decades, before they were finally resurrected in the 1990's. While his ideas may be disagreeable to some, Ivan Yefremov's writing is invariably captivating and profound, with adventure, romance, history and philosophy merging together.

Maria K. is a pen name of a first-generation Russian-Ukrainian immigrant Maria Igorevna Kuroshchepova. An engineer by education, an analyst by trade, as well as a writer, photographer, artist and amateur model, Maria brings her talent for weaving an engaging narrative to stories of life, fashion and style advice, book and movie reviews, and common-sense and to-the-point essays on politics and economy.
