Overview

That's Life

Julia Fordham's eighth record, That's Life, rekindles the smoky, blue-eyed soul flame that's warmed her fans' hearts for years. Once again teaming up with Concrete Love producer Larry Klein, the English singer-songwriter infuses the arrangements with plenty of tasty Hammond B-3 organ riffs, courtesy of Billy Preston, who lends a distinctive Hi Records vibe to songs such as the groove-soaked "Jump" and the rumbling "Walking on the Water," which is also adorned by Memphis Horns brass. Elsewhere, Greg Leisz's tasteful pedal steel and a touch of strings only add to the appeal of the acoustic guitar–driven "Perfect Me," on which Fordham's husky vocal phrasing recalls that of Klein's ex and Fordham's idol, Joni Mitchell. At its most stripped down, this outing pulsates with the yearning and pain of severed couplings, as on the piano-kissed "Downhill Sunday" and "Guilty," a bittersweet remembrance that boasts the immediacy of Annie Lennox or Joan Armatrading. At this stage in her career, Julia Fordham continues to refine her smart songwriting and exquisite vocal execution, and with That's Life, she adds to her already impressive canon.

Hey if you haven’t heard the new album from Julia Fordham “That’s life” I just want you to know you are missing out on a great album especially if you love jazz like I do! I mean Julia’s vocals are just amazing on this album. And, it reminds me of sitting in a café somewhere in an art community sipping on coffee watching the artist painting or a nice Sunday afternoon drive. Some of my favorite songs off the album are track 1 “Sugar”, track 5“Downhill Sunday”, track 8“That’s Life”, and track 4“Jump” The thing that attracted me the most to this album and I think you will agree is the lyrics blended together with the smooth melody and lyrics. I also just love the choruses in both the songs “Jump” and “Downhill Sunday”. Take it from me you have to check this album out it is a guaranteed must have trust me you’ll love it!
