EXCELLENT book for your first Ironman! Save yourself the time of reading a million articles and other books! I was pre-med, interned as a PT and have been a competitive athlete my whole life (just to give you some idea that I am a serious athlete who knows science) and I followed this advice and his advanced training plan on Training Peaks to a T over the course of almost a year training for Ironman Lake Placid 2015. I am the type who had to look up a million scientific studies to verify what advice is truly best, and I came to respect how brilliantly this book distilled all the MOST RECENT SCIENTIFIC KNOWLEDGE on sports nutrition, psychology, training methods and race day planning- with some funny stories woven throughout. If you read about how the top Kenyan marathoners train, you will find it is in his plan without boring you on all the details, just trust his thorough approach. One paragraph contains a lot of research behind it, so re-read and highlight till you get it all. I found all his suggestions to be the smartest out there and based on the higher level research, but relayed it in simple terms. My favorite mantra from his book: "triathlon is not about who goes the fastest, but who slows down the least." It's not over til you cross the finish line! Start with this book.
After purchasing this book I was disappointed in the swimming portion. Basically I bought the looking advice and basically says "go find a swim coach" and "go buy instructional videos". Then the workouts aren't fully descriptive. Overall it's a decent book so I give it 3 *'s.
