I purchased the military edition after reading The first The Five Love Languages. My husband kept saying because of his military background, he's been "trained" to think differently. So I was excited when this came out But so disappointed because it's almost identical to the first book. The stories are 90% the same, and so far, hasn't touched on the way military people are trained to "think" differently. So it's either my husband copping out of getting in touch with his love language or A way for Dr. Chapman to. increase sales. Doing a repeat book with same stories has dampened my opinion on the sincerity put into writing this.
I read the original 5 Languages of Love and was so thoroughly impressed that I thought this book would be equally inspiring. It's almost verbatim of the original text! This isn't my mind playing tricks on me. I seriously just finished reading the original maybe an hour ago. I am almost 30 e-reader pages into this book and I am disgusted at the blatant use of the author's previous work. To repackage an old product and market it as new is generally frowned upon but to take advantage of military families who are genuinely seeking help is despicable.
It's been a long time since I've read the original 5 Love Languages by Gary Chapman, so this was a refreshing re-read that reminded me of many of the finer details I've forgotten. But I was impressed with this version for military couples. Not only is every example in the book from a military family, but the authors added in great suggestions to help spouses cover deployments. This book is definitely an asset to military marriages who want to do more than just survive their active duty time.
Great book for husbands or wives. Pre deployment or post deployment. Already good marriages looking to stay good or get better. And definitely helpfull for any marriages going through hard times!
Gary Chapman is a great author, and one of the most knowledgeable about relationships. I'm a big fan of his series. The military edition of the Five Love Languages is very similar to the original, as the principles are still going to be the same. The stories of the people who he worked with have changed, and those stories are that of military couples. It is written different enough that it can make things click for someone who didn't necessarily get anything from the first book. Personally, I think every couple should read the Five Love Languages. It opens your mind to things you don't necessarily think about on your own. Every person essentially fits into one or more of five categories. In the back of the book, there is a test you can take. The score of that test determines where you fit. There is also a test for your partner. All in all, there wasn't anything I didn't like about this book. It's a great tool for marriages and couples who may be having a hard time with communication or expressing love. On top of all that, the cover is beautiful. It's very American with the flag, and it's just beautiful. I received a copy of this book from the publisher for the purpose of this review.
