The Adventures of Horace, George and Ingle - The Rise of the Black Knight by HW Cumming

Horace, George and Ingle are three brothers growing up during a time of relative calm in a land once dominated by great battles. Galray has enjoyed peace and prosperity for many years under the watchfulness of the knight’s council and the strong leadership of their father the King.

The boys didn’t know that tonight would be the start of an adventure that would change the course of their lives as they sat down for a game of chess. What starts as a simple storm turns into a race to save the kingdom and unravel a mystery that will challenge everything they know. Dragons, myths and betrayal lay ahead as the three brothers are forced to lead and become men.

This is clearly the beginning of a larger book or series. The three brothers named in the title are princes, sons of the king, and they must go off on a quest up explain some mysterious happenings at the castle. There is a failed truce with a dragon kingdom and some helpful assistance from a creature who may be gnome, forest witch, or Oracle. Plenty of excitement for young readers, and plenty to empathize with the young heroes, who are well described by the author. It will be good to see what happens next.

Some children’s books are just that, enjoyable for children but that’s as far as they go, but then there are others that really offer up another level that adults can get into the tales of excitement and innocence as well. The Rise of the Black Knight is thankfully one of those books. I bought this to read to my children and found myself absorbed by the loveable characters and beautiful writing as well. I know the kids are excited to get into the next book but I think I might have a cheeky read through on my own first without any distractions.

The Rise Of The Black Knight is a real fun adventure, the kind I used to love to read when I was growing up and this did a great job of transporting me back to my childhood. The kingdom of Galray provides a great setting, the writing is well done, and the characters George, Horace and Ingle are well developed and compelling, but the most important thing for me is this was a really enjoyable read. I’ll definitely be looking out for more from HW Cumming, but for now I think I’ll reread this one and enjoy the boys’ adventures in Galray again.

The story was interesting, but I, occasionally, found the writing to be redundant and clunky.
