The Alchemist Agenda by Marty Weiss

When Charlie Rocklin and his company Gold Diggers Exploration set out to recover a 17th century shipwreck, they discover an undocumented Nazi submarine with enigmatic symbols. Ariel Ellis, a femme fatale historian with a mysterious past, proves that the U-boat contains the key to a formula more valuable than any sunken treasure, and more deadly than any weapon that has ever existed. In this globetrotting international adventure, Charlie and Ariel uncover an accelerating tempest of secrecy, lies, and agendas, fighting not only for the truth, but for their lives. Weiss's debut novel is a lightning-paced story with surprises at every turn, and shows us that our personal legends may be more real than we ever could have imagined.

Thrillers are a genre that I do not regularly review due to the graphic violence and profanity that are often included. Since the author combined the history and thriller genre, I was certainly willing to give it a try. Thankfully, the profanity was relatively mild, and the violence was never too descriptive. The premise of the story was something about which I was unfamiliar. I did not know that there were those who questioned whether Hitler committed suicide. I had also never heard about any of the alchemy work that was rumored to have been done. I have to admit that although I don't give any credence to these rumors, but the book did make a somewhat believable case. I found myself kind of liking Charlie and Ariel (and I appreciated there being no sex scenes--even if it did happen between them). The author did throw me for a loop concerning them, but you have to read that for yourself. I did struggle to keep the characters straight, and I think a character list would have helped in this area--especially when it came to the foreign names. I also grew tired of the copious amount of death in the book. I understand that death and violence are always a part of a good thriller, but when so many die, I lose interest. But that is just a personal preference. In short, if you like thrillers, this book is definitely for you. I endeavored to connect with the characters and story, but I just couldn't seem to. The book was written well enough, but I think I would have enjoyed it more if the topic had been an entirely plausible topic.  I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I was not financially compensated, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.

Marty Weiss in his new book, "The Alchemist Agenda" published by Graybooks brings us into the life of Charlie Rocklin. From the back cover: When Charlie Rocklin and his company Gold Diggers Exploration set out to recover a 17th century shipwreck, they discover an undocumented Nazi submarine with enigmatic symbols. Do you believe that at the end of World War II Hitler committed suicide in his bunker? Can't prove it as no body was ever found. What if he escaped? And what was all the alchemy experiments that were going on by him? Charlie Rocklin is an underwater explorer who finds and recovers ancient underwater wrecks. While looking for one shipwreck he finds a Nazi submarine and then the story really takes off. Now Charlie and Ariel must find out the truth behind this sub, stay ahead of the bad guys who do not want them to succeed and are trying to kill them as they race around Europe. Charlie and Ariel get to be spies as well as archaeologists as they try to unravel the clues from the past for this present day mystery. Suspense, murder, espionage, and romance all rolled up into one adventure. "The Alchemist Agenda" is one very exciting book. It is a thriller as both Charlie and Ariel are, literally, on the run for their lives as they try to solve the mystery of the submarine and what's on it. "The Alchemist Agenda" is a roaring good story that will keep you highly interested in what is going to happen next. I sincerely hope that Mr. Weiss is going to continue this as a series. I would like to see more of these characters in future adventures. Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from Pump Up Your Book. I was not required to write a positive review.
