More action and suspense in this action filled fantasy. Love how Wirt and all the other students at the academy is coming into their own. I can't wait to read the next book!

The second instalment in the series finds Wirt with a new roommate, new kid Roland Black who isn't very friendly towards Wirt or Spencer but seems very interested in spending time with Alana. Wirt feels that there is something that Roland is hiding but he can't quite put his finger on it until one night in their dorm room he hears Roland having a conversation with someone about what his plans are while he's at the school and it's not good, but with Alana infatuated with him and Wirt and Spencer not spending that much time together Wirt is determined to find out what's going on with Roland himself. And if that wasn't enough to keep Wirt on his toes, the Headmaster announces that exams will begin to pick the fourteen students who will commence into the Elite class next year, whoever doesn't make it will be sent home. The ending of this book was frustrating only for the fact of the way we were kept hanging, I need to get my hands on the third book, this was definitely my favourite of the two books so far and I look forward to continuing on to see what happens next. Another Kailin Gow series highly recommended.

Unpleasant surprises await the trio of Wirt, Alana and Spencer in this second installment of the Alchemists. Unpleasantness in the form of a new student named Roland Black. Wirt starts his second year at the Alchemist's Academy with his two friends barely speaking to each other after a summer romance failed. To add to the drama comes a boy, Roland, who seems to only want to cause trouble between them, while working on a scheme that only he is aware of. This series is taking a life of its own and its becoming more and more exciting with each book I read. I like that there seems to be no dark wizard in this, but more a Merlin based wizardry - with Wirt starting off by dreaming about King Arthur and his famous sword, Excalibur. There isn't a lot of this legend in the book as it continues, but there is more excitement as everyone at the school fights to become one of the fourteen that go on to become part of the Elite team. I have a feeling that the King Arthur theme will be developed further in later books. I really like how this story line is developing and the similarities with other books is fading. The pace of the writing is good. I read the book in one sitting and wasn't tempted to go and read another. There's a really nice mystery developing in the series now that makes me want to find out what happens to the characters in the book and who is plotting what. I'm also interested to know if Wirt ever makes it back to his dimension - not that there's really anything there for him. The characters are still the same with Wirt still developing new, exciting skills, only in this book I think there was more tension between the character which was cleverly created by Roland. Roland has definitely been created to be a character you love to hate and I would really like to know more about him. His back story is sketchy at best, but is to be expected when he's part of the mystery component. Alana annoys me in this the worst. She's gone from quite a strong character in the first book to this almost whiny one. It's a shame because she was one of the characters I liked the most from the first book.  Anyway, I would recommend this book to anyone who likes magical books.  Book review done by Sandy@Magical Manuscripts

Elemental Explosions hops back into Wirt's magical life at the Alchemists Academy. Summer is over and his friends, Spencer, Alana, Priscilla and Robert are moving back in, along with a new student: Roland Black. As second year students at the Academy, Wirt and his friends must study hard and participate in strenuous tests if they want to move on into the Elite class. Wirt focuses all his energies into passing tests and unlocking his potential, but the nagging sense that Roland is plotting something against the Academy diverts his attention. Kailin seamlessly continues The Alchemists Academy series while also opening up two subplots to further the adventure. The outset of Elemental Explosions drags readers into Wirt's mysterious dream featuring Merlin and King Arthur. While the novel doesn't specifically focus on this mystery, it sets the base to what is sure to be an explosive situation. As the second years strive to become one of the fourteen students selected for the Elite class, the Academy reinstates its most dangerous test: the quantum games. There's history behind the quantum games involving Roland and Spencer's fathers, bitter history, so the outcome of the games is sure to be dangerous and shocking. Elemental Explosions is just as adventurous and fun as the first book of the series, Stones to Ashes, but some of the characters haven't kept their shine. Alana, for one, has attracted the attention of Spencer, Roland, and Wirt, but she doesn't seem very deserving of it personality wise. She's not as sweet or mature as she seemed before. Honestly, I'm hoping Kailin introduces another character to act as a true love interest for Wirt. Not only would it shake up the group's dynamic even more, but it would really give Wirt someone else to think about! There is a definite change in the royal siblings, though. Robert and Priscilla are now able to actively learn magic and both are taking their studies seriously. Robert even tries to stay away from his Jesting habits as he prepares to rule after his father, Kind Wilford. Priscilla is still kind of an airhead, but it's impossible to love her strength and innocence. I love that the characters are altering along with this exciting plot. As the series continues, there will be much growth and more to learn about Wirt, Spencer, Robert, Priscilla and Alana. *ebook provided in exchange for an honest review*

I really liked this sequel. It flowed right from the beginning and of course I loved all the characters! (Especially Wirt!!) I liked how there was a mix of comedy, suspense, romance and mystery in this one novel. I think as far as sequels go, this one lives up to its Predecessor and did not disappoint me at all!
