That's the text message Supreme Court Justice Arnold Hirschfeld receives as hearings commence in the U.S. Supreme Court to determine the fate of the 28th Amendment - enacted to criminalize abuse of power on the part of our political representatives.

In court to defend the amendment, retired U.S. District Court Judge Cyrus Brooks observes his old friend and law school classmate Hirschfeld acting strangely and dispatches veteran D.C. homicide detective Frank Lotello to find out why.

In the meantime, Hirschfeld's precocious and feisty 11-year-old diabetic granddaughter Cassie, brutally kidnapped to control her grandfather's swing vote upholding or invalidating the amendment, watches her insulin pump running dry and wonders which poses her greatest threat, the kidnappers or the clock. As Brooks is forced to choose between saving our nation or saving the girl.

About the Author

Described by his readers as a cross between Agatha Christie, Lee Child, and John Lescroart, bestselling author Ron Barak keeps his readers flipping the pages into the wee hours of the night. While he mostly lets his characters tell his stories, he does manage to get his licks in too.

Barak derives great satisfaction in knowing that his books not only entertain but also stimulate others to think about how things might be, how people can actually resolve real-world problems. In particular, Barak tackles the country’s dysfunctional government representatives—not just back-seat driving criticism for the sake of being a back-seat driver, but truly framing practical remedies to the political abuse and corruption adversely affecting too many people’s lives today. Barak’s extensive legal background and insight allow him to cleverly cross-pollinate his fiction and today’s sad state of political reality.

In his latest novel, THE AMENDMENT KILLER, Barak calls upon his real-world legal ingenuity and skill to craft a 28th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution criminalizing political abuse and corruption that Constitutional scholars across the country are heralding as a highly plausible answer to the political chaos destroying the very moral fiber of the country today. It’s difficult to read THE AMENDMENT KILLER and not imagine what could—and should—be expected and demanded of those political leaders who have forgotten they are there to serve and not be served.

Barak is singularly qualified to have authored THE AMENDMENT KILLER, which will appeal to political and legal thriller aficionados alike. Barak is a law school honors graduate and a former Olympic athlete. While still in law school, he authored a bill introduced in Congress that overnight forced the settlement of a decades-long dispute between the NCAA and the AAU to control amateur athletics in the United States.

The potential 28th Amendment is a proposed rule that would change the responsibilities of the congressional members and more. The amendment has not followed the normal course to be elected and the hearing has become a televised event. But some powerful people don’t want this amendment to pass and they are willing to do whatever it takes to stop it. Justice Arnold Hirschfeld gets the message that his granddaughter has been kidnapped and that he won’t get her back unless he follows instructions. This becomes a race against time both is nullifying the amendment but also for Cassie. Cassie is a diabetic and has had her insulin pump removed and only a little insulin on hand. I will be the first to admit that I shy away from anything legal or political, especially because of our current political situation. But this story could easily be one in our news today. Of course there is the controversy of the 28th Amendment with how it is being voted on and what it will cover. Of course you have people on both sides that have strong feeling about this amendment. Of course there are those that are willing to kill to get what they want. Mixed in the hearing is the story of Cassie, a young girl with aspirations to be a tennis star and has diabetes that normally would be controlled. It becomes a race against time to get her rescued before that causes more complications. This is an amazing thriller that will appeal to anyone. Although the topic is not my normal read I am so glad that I got the chance to listen to the story. But that could also be because Chris Andrew Ciulla does a fantastic job narrating this book. I received a complimentary copy of this book. I voluntarily chose to read and post an honest review.

Who is the Amendment Killer? (Disclaimer: I was provided a copy of the book by Authors Cross Promotion (AXP). I read it and provided my honest review) The Amendment Killer a Brooks/Lotello Thriller by Ronald S. Barker is captivating, suspenseful, spectacular, and a must-read. From the first to the last pages the book whispers beckons for you to read more because that’s exactly what you want to do. Every spare moment I picked the book up and read what I could. The character-building from the main to the tertiary and background character(s) were well developed. The author did such a good job, that you remembered a tertiary’s name and where they fit into the storyline. The same for world-building. There was a rich context provided for the storyline to unfold its plot and character interactions within the plot but not get lost at any time because of the rich, deep and intense environmental markers. The Amendment Killer was a psychological thriller to be reckoned with and at the end when the puzzle seemed completed you find some critical pieces are missing. Hopefully, this suggests another book. Overall, I overwhelmingly enjoyed reading, being enveloped by and going along for the ride with The Amendment Killer. MY RECOMMENDATION: 5-STARS. Grab the book and read it. You will not be disappointed! –Tex.

In The Amendment KIller, author Robert S. Barak utilizes his legal knowledge and experience to weave a riveting legal thriller that takes the reader on a suspenseful adventure set in Washington D.C. with the backdrop of the prestigious United States Supreme Court. From its traumatic beginning to climatic ending, The Amendment Killer is an action-packed and fast-paced gripping tale that follows Supreme Court Associate Justice Arnold Hirschfeld as he is faced with a serious conundrum, whether to uphold or abandon his true judicial beliefs and vote against the 28th Amendment in a landmark case for personal reasons in order to save his eleven-year-old granddaughter Cassie, who was kidnapped as an innocent pawn by someone who wants the USSC Justices to find standing and invalidate the 28th Amendment. As a fan of legal thrillers, especially when they revolve around a political and judicial theme, I was eager to read The Amendment Killer, and I wasn't left disappointed! Author Robert S. Barak weaves a powerful and compelling tale that has enough drama, suspense, intrigue, and surprising twists and turns that easily engages the reader to follow how Associate Justice Hirschfeld and retired US District Court Judge Cyrus Brooks approach the landmark case as it is being heard and decided in the Supreme Court, while Washington D.C. Detective Frank Lotello investigates the kidnapping and tries to beat the clock and find Cassie before it is too late! I really enjoyed how the author utilized his legal knowledge and experience to transport the reader into the fascinating inner workings of the political and judicial world that is Washington D.C. When you add in the hidden secrets and dark political and legal dealings within the District, and the suspense and danger of the kidnapping investigation, you get an explosive story that takes you on one hell of a thrill ride and a book that you won't be able to put down!

Imagine the terror of receiving a text saying a monster has your granddaughter. That is exactly what happened to a Supreme Court justice in the middle of a history making decision that could change politics in the United States. Does he follow the demands of the kidnapper and vote with his heart or does he vote with his conscience and morals reminding politicians they work FOR the people, to serve the people, not the other way around. THE AMENDMENT KILLER by Ronald Barak is a political hotbed, brimming with suspense, incredibly well-developed characters and tension through the roof. In contemporary times when the integrity of every branch of the government is under constant scrutiny, one justice is under the gun to undermine all our country is based on. Mr. Barak has turned a legal thriller into a psychological nightmare that will make a direct hit into the hearts of parents and readers everywhere. How far would you go to save someone you love? Would you betray all that you stand for, the people you serve? Brilliant writing, taut, riveting and addictive! I received a complimentary review copy from Book Funnel and PICT Tours as agent for the author. My review is voluntary.

If you don’t like “edge of your seat, nail biting” suspense, then this book is not for you. I spent the entire book trying to decide if this supreme court justice would cave and try to kill the amendment in order to save his granddaughter. Of course, I was sympathetic with Justice Hirschfield’s situation, but I was really drawn to Cassie. Then again there’s not a single character who didn’t hold my attention. I didn’t want this book to end. These people really grabbed me. Thank you, Mr. Barak, for a story filled with engaging characters. I hope you have something more in mind for them. ***Book provided without charge by Partners in Crime Tours.*** Submitted by sunny island breezes.
