Alice was a young girl with an open future. However, due to abuse and circumstances her self-esteem disappeared. Seeking love and acceptance, she fell into the wrong crowd and wound up in jail. This is the story of how Alice became the woman she is today and how she finally tried to find love and acceptance within her own heart. This is a novel. The author declares that it is based off of Alice from Wonderland and even alludes to this character occasionally in the story. However, from the beginning the author explains in detail how she interviewed real life women in jail and learned their life stories. The author’s goal is to tell their story by creating the fictional Alice. Written like a memoir, Alice recounts her days from the childhood abuse to the crime spree and eventually finding God through the help of therapy. This is a very profound book, focused more on life lessons than a normal flow of a novel. Notes: The author provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Reviewed by Lorena Sanqui for Readers' Favorite The Angel with Burnt Wings by Scarlett Jensen is the story of Alice and her descent from an angel to the pits of hell. At a young age, Alice was molested and raped. Fearing negative reaction and rejection, she didn't tell anyone about it. Instead she looked for acceptance in all the wrong places and got tangled up with bad people. There is one man she thought will love her unconditionally but he only used her to get out of prison. Alice, under the instructions from the man, formed a gang to do armed robberies and other crimes to come up with the money to bail out this man. At nineteen, she went to prison where she will learn that acceptance, love, and forgiveness, with the help of God should come from herself. One thing that was going through my mind while reading this story was that, wow she is a strong, commendable woman. Another is that a support system is really important when facing difficulties. She suffered and made many wrong decisions, spent her time living in fear and sadness but she came out wiser and stronger. This book is for anyone who feels shackled, not just the literal meaning, but for anyone who feels like they are tied up in something and can’t get free. Scarlett Jensen wrote the chapters like lessons or steps to follow to get to freedom. We all feel the way Alice felt in the book, so we should also learn from her experiences.
